I look forward to the short season. Remember what happened the last time there was a shortened season?

North Korea leader Kim Jong-il dies
Pyongyang, North Korea

Please expand this post for updates and resources.

Mon Dec 19, 12:01 p.m. KST: North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, who ruled the communist nation with an iron fist while pursuing nuclear weapons programs, has died, according to state media. He was 69.

Kim, who took over North Korea after his father and national founder Kim Il-sung died in 1994, "passed away from a great mental and physical strain" during a train ride at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, the Korean Central News Agency said in an urgent dispatch.

The South Korean military has declared an emergency alert and South Korea President Lee has ordered all government officials on emergency status.

Kim Jong-un has been officially designated as "Great Successor" to his father, Kim Jong-il.

Kim's funeral is set for Dec. 28 in Pyongyang, the mourning period will last until Dec. 29.

A statement issued by the White House reads: We are closely monitoring reports that Kim Jong Il is dead. The President has been notified, and we are in close touch with our allies in South Korea and Japan. We remain committed to stability on the Korean peninsula, and to the freedom and security of our allies.

+The Associated Press reports that the U.S. may postpone decisions on re-engaging North Korea in nuclear talks and providing it with food aid.

The South Korean government has made no decision on whether to express condolences, according to a senior official.
