Say hello to my sister's cat. Well, one of my sister's two cats. This is the more sociable one. She came to keep me company while I was reading on the beach one evening. How could I resist taking her picture?

Yves Meyer received the Abel Prize from the king of Norway today.

In the third picture, taken yesterday, he is seen with this year's Holmboe Prize winner, Hanan Mohamed Abdelrahman. The Holmboe Prize, named after Niels Henrik Abel's mathematics teacher, is awarded annually to an outstanding mathematics teacher.

What was a lovely, sunny day turned foggy. But just as the sun was setting, the fog thinned. And here is the resulting sunset.

This is easily both the biggest and prettiest fly amanita (amanita muscaria) I have ever seen. The cap is easily ten centimeters in diameter. I found it during a car trip today. I had stopped the car and walked into the woods to take a leak when this magnificent specimen caught my attention. A nice compensation for my prostate gland forcing more frequent stops along the way!

This is a view from the island of Tustna, just inland from the more well-known (to Norwegians at any rate) island Smøla. The prominent peak in the left half of the picture is called Stabben. The hike up that mountain, 827 meters high, is said to be somewhat challenging.

Smøla, by the way, is almost all bog. It is the largest contiguous bog in Norway. As you can see, Tustna isn't all that dry, either.

Andrew Wiles received the Abel Prize today. In this picture, he has just received the prize from Crown Prince Haakon.

Apologies for the somewhat blurry photograph. From my place in the fourth row of seats, this is the best I can do without standing up and blocking the view of those behind me.

This is Andrew Wiles, 2016 Abel Laureate. The picture was taken shortly after the end of the Holmboe prize ceremony at the Oslo Cathedral School. This is the school Niels Henrik Abel attended. His mathematics teacher Bernt Michael Holmboe recognized Abel's mathematical talents early on. The prize named after Holmboe is awarded each year to an outstanding mathematics teacher. Tomorrow, Sir Andrew will himself receive the Abel prize.

RealClimate.org is gone, domain expired. Scouring the 'net, I find little or no information explaining what happened and why. FWIW, the home pages of Gavin Schmidt and Michal Mann still link to the now defunct site.

Edit (a few days later): It appears they are coming back after having some issues with their domain. But the site is currently extremely slow and lacking CSS. Hopefully, they'll get it all sorted out in due course.

Edit the second: They really are coming back. It seems they let the domain name lapse. The site is still flaky as hell, but they are definitely recovering. As one could expect, the deniers are gloating.

I won't do any more updates to this post. The danger definitely seems to have passed.

No kidding, the sunset actually looked like this, except that viewing it on a light background like here makes it seem darker than it felt. This light only lasted for a few minutes, though, so I was lucky to catch it. You should click on the picture to see it in larger size. The default view just doesn't do it justice.

John Forbes Nash, Jr. 1928–2015

It is with great sadness I learned about the death of John Nash and his wife Alicia in a traffic accident less than a week after he received the Abel Prize. This is one of my last pictures of him, taken just hours after he received the prize.
