RealClimate.org is gone, domain expired. Scouring the 'net, I find little or no information explaining what happened and why. FWIW, the home pages of Gavin Schmidt and Michal Mann still link to the now defunct site.

Edit (a few days later): It appears they are coming back after having some issues with their domain. But the site is currently extremely slow and lacking CSS. Hopefully, they'll get it all sorted out in due course.

Edit the second: They really are coming back. It seems they let the domain name lapse. The site is still flaky as hell, but they are definitely recovering. As one could expect, the deniers are gloating.

I won't do any more updates to this post. The danger definitely seems to have passed.

John Forbes Nash, Jr. 1928–2015

It is with great sadness I learned about the death of John Nash and his wife Alicia in a traffic accident less than a week after he received the Abel Prize. This is one of my last pictures of him, taken just hours after he received the prize.

Here are this year's Abel laureates, Louis Nirenberg and John F. Nash, Jr., the day before they are about to receive the Abel Prize. This picture is taken moments before a wreath laying ceremony at the Abel monument in Oslo.

There are so many great aurora pictures out there, and this can't really compete. But it's my aurora picture, made last Wednesday night on campus. It just so happened that I had camera and tripod on hand when we learned there was a good aurora going on, so we rushed outside and I managed to get this picture and a few more while it lasted.

Party time! We celebrate two of the winners of this year's Nobel Prize in medicine, May-Britt and Edvard Moser. Here (left picture) is May-Britt enjoying a jazz rendition of her own description of her research (spoken three times faster than she or anyone else in the audience would be able to) at a reception in her and Edvard's honour at NTNU this afternoon. The musicians are Henning Sommerro (with harmonica) and John Pål Inderberg (with saxophone and the fastest mouth in Norway). Unfortunately, I did not manage to get a good picture with Edvard in it. We all had a good time! In the right picture: Kristoffer Loe, a talented jazz musician educated at NTNU improvises in honour of the couple.

My congratulations to Moser and Moser!

No kidding, the sunset actually looked like this, except that viewing it on a light background like here makes it seem darker than it felt. This light only lasted for a few minutes, though, so I was lucky to catch it. You should click on the picture to see it in larger size. The default view just doesn't do it justice.

This flower may be known to some as a lady of the snows, or mogop in Norwegian. It blooms in the mountains in the spring, shortly after the snow is gone. It is one of my favourite flowers, and quite photogenic. This one was found in Dovre, Norway (see location in the photo details).

Maybe not the greatest solar eclipse photo ever, but it's my solar eclipse photo. This eclipse happened during my calculus class today, and I just had to interrupt the lecture and drag the class outside to have a look (I didn't have to ask twice, though). I had just one pair of protective glasses to go around, but then this cloud came along and made unprotected observation – and photography – possible for a short while.

What was it trying to compute?
Did it get into an infinite recursion?
