An all-day continuous concrete pour has been completed at Hanson’s Padeswood works in Flintshire as part of our investment in new plant to improve the efficiency and environmental performance of our business.

Almost 900 cubic metres was laid to provide the foundations for a new vertical roller mill, purchased from a HeidelbergCement joint venture plant in Bilbao.

Three Hanson plants provided the concrete for the continuous pour. Project manager Chris Sheady said “It was a huge effort from a team of people across the business and would not have been possible without the full support and commitment of all the drivers.”

The replacement mill will be capable of grinding up to 650,000 tonnes of clinker a year and will improve efficiency and reduce energy consumption. It is part of a £20 million upgrade at Padeswood which also includes investment in new rail loading facilities to allow cement to be delivered by train, reducing lorry movements.

Hanson Contracting is one of just six businesses to earn a new Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) health and safety award.

Launched this year, the Patron’s award is presented to organisations that have achieved at least 25 consecutive RoSPA gold certificates.

Compliance and business improvement manager Ian Tomlinson received the award from RoSPA trustee Jocelyn McNulty and said Hanson Contracting was the only business from the construction sector to qualify for the award.

Our FastTrack high-strength concrete was used by Story Contracting on Network Rail’s Steeple Aston track upgrade – helping to meet the project’s challenging timescale and exacting strength requirements.
FastTrack can be used in a broad range of applications where speed and efficiency are critical and Hanson’s expert technical team designed a mix for Steeple Aston which initially hardened in 37 minutes and showed a strength gain of 40.5N/mm2 in 24 hours.
The project at Steeple Aston involved the refurbishment of three structures on the Didcot to Chester railway line, including repairs to a Victorian arched bridge.

Hanson and Dorset County Council have won the partnership category in the 2017 Highways Awards for their long-standing strategic relationship.
The Highway Partnership Award is presented to an organisation or highway authority that has driven, or can demonstrate, a collaborative approach designed to increase the benefits for society or its local community, with clear illustrations of the positive outcomes.
The judges praised the Dorset/Hanson Strategic Partnership, commenting: “Good performance improvements, clear efficiency targets and excellent to see the partnership charter really working.”
The Dorset/Hanson Strategic Partnership, now in its third term, was the first private/public sector partnership of its kind in the UK. It delivers a high quality, value service covering a wide range of highways projects from small maintenance and repair, to major reconstructions such as the £22 million A338. It has delivered measurable benefits to members and stakeholders, including over 1 million man hours with zero reportable accidents and improved customer satisfaction.
Andrew Martin, service director for highways at Dorset County Council, is pictured (left) receiving the award with Hanson Contracting’s major projects director Denis Curran (centre) from Martin Webb, group operations director for WJ Group, the award sponsor. He said: “We are delighted that our partnership has been recognised by the industry in this way. It is a fantastic achievement and I would like to congratulate everyone involved in making it such a success.”

All our operational sites will stop work for an hour on Monday October 16, between 7am and 8am, to carry out a series of health, safety and wellbeing related activities.

The aim of the stand-down is to get everyone thinking about their own safety and the safety of colleagues, drivers, contractors and visitors as we work towards our target of zero harm. http://ow.ly/YecV30fPkB5
