I've been doing this as a GS Guardian and have barely been taking any damage. Worth noting. :)
Helpful guide, thanks!

Mmmm this was one of the first YA books I bought and I still haven't read it. Almost 2.. 3 years on? Cannae be arsed with "average". Maybe I'll swap it for something better!

I think it's still worth reading just for the experience, especially if you plan on watching the movie (I enjoy comparing books to their film adaptations :D) It's a fairly good read, but yeah, nothing really stood out for me. Still glad I read it, but I don't think I'll continue with the series, unless I'm in desperate need of something to read.

Ooh interesting, would you recommend the series as a historical read?

Only if you have an interest in the period, I think, as it's less character-driven and more about the setting and the events. Also, the series being originally written in French in the 50s, the writing can at times be a bit rough on the eyes (like with most translated work, and I'm sure we also lose a lot of the nuances the process) and the rest of the books in this series are pretty hard to find these days. The publisher just re-released the first two in new editions, with the future books to follow, but as usual it could take a few years.

I know exactly what you mean with the YA screaming. Often drives me to just put a book right back down.

I'd really like to read this one (before I see the movie) but our library only has it in large print! Growl! Hopefully they'll get it in some time, I may even request a copy.

I have the same love of Tudor historical fiction, especially Henry VIII's wives! Recently discovered one called Queen's Gambit about Katherine Parr which I immediately requested a review copy of and can't stop lovingly stroking it. Really looking forward to that one.

But the fact that this is an alternate history is even more interesting! When reading historical fiction, I always find myself cheering on a character who I KNOW has a different path but as a reader I can't help it. With an alternate history, you don't already know the ending. Win!

I'd never read a book like this. I mean, I've read plenty of books before with elements of alternate reality, but so many of them tended to fall into the category of fantasy. This being a historical fiction where that is the basic foundation, was a big surprise to me, so I had no idea what to expect. It was definitely different, because like you said, this way there's no way to anticipate what might happen because you don't know the "ending". Anything can go, really, and sometimes I even wondered why the author didn't take some ideas even further. Might as well go all the way, right? :D

And that Katherine Parr book looks interesting, I'm going to have to keep an eye out for that!
