This is a most excellent tour diary from Donald Fagen (Steely Dan).
Steely Dan singer on an unpleasant flight, hanging at the Beverly Hills Hotel pool and a party for a Hollywood A-lister

Revealing! He's a genius of the flawless clarity that sounds so sharp. Then he hits a flat like that AC/DC bullshit, either a condescending dick or needs to be seen that way. Many of our greatest creators are abrasive and hard to like. I love his music.

These just blow my mind. I have absolutely no link in my mind between music and colours.
As a synesthete, the music I hear is translated into a flow of texture and colors. Synethesia, although not disorientating, can sometimes leave me at odds trying to describe what I can see to others. Painting in oils and acrylics is a way to express and exhibit the beautiful colors that I see on a day to day basis, whether it's hearing someone's name, or that song on the radio.

Letters have emotions for me. I can point at letters and say that one is happy and that one is sad. I have no idea why.

Last night of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival! I highly recommend Ben Target. I've never seen anything like his show!
A maelstrom of award-winning visual comedy, audacious high jinks and unforgettable audience molestation from this critically acclaimed absurdist sensation.  'This is the sort of mad experience – 'show' doesn't seem to be quite the right word – that ought to be part of everyone's fringe....

good fun!

Why do people see the Virgin Mary on a cheese sandwich or hear demonic lyrics in "Stairway to Heaven"? Using video and music, skeptic Michael Shermer shows how we convince ourselves to believe — and overlook the facts.

The sandwich because over active imagination, the demons in the song well they bought into the part of Paul is dead prank.

Day 1 – Favorite YouTube Musician/ Band
  #14DaysofMusicChallenge

I had a think about the topic for the day: favourite YOUTUBE musician/band. So I thought about videos bands have made specifically for YouTube that have gone viral. I first thought of Snarky Puppy feat. Lalah Hathaway - Something (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SJIgTLe0hc) but settled on this crazy cover of Baby by Dirty Loops.

I just love all the harmony changes, that bass solo, the overall imagination and re-imagination of the original song. The singer's sense of pitch is phenomenal - I wish I could sing like that!! And the ending totally makes me laugh. I love it.

Saw this show last night, East End Cabaret, from London. Highly reccommended! Very clever songwriting, brilliant characters.
As seen on BBC3 and ABC2 and direct from London, the award-winning cult comedy duo and professional perverts EastEnd Cabaret are back with their most raucous and risqué show yet! With an arsenal of cleverly naughty songs and the sharpest wit around, Bernadette Byrne (deviant diva) and Victor...

Day 5: Favourite childhood song
#14DaysOfMusicChallenge
Yep, I definitely grew up in the 80s. This is Peter Combe singing his hit song, Newspaper Mama. It makes precisely zero sense. In the last ten years, Combe has started gigging again, with Australian children of the 80s rejoicing at hearing their old favourites again, and bringing their own children to the gigs to love the music.

Day 4: Jazz
#14DaysOfMusicChallenge
Ugh, too many choices! Settled on Maleah by Les McCann. When I had some jazz piano lessons with Bob Sedergreen, he told me to go listen to McCann. I love this song for its groove. In the wrong hands, it'd so easily come up naff. Timing and tone are everything.
Additional trivia: Les McCann 'discovered' Roberta Flack and even included her singing a song on one of his albums, to help push her career forward. The album is Les Is More, 1967. With many live recordings on it, it's a wonderful picture of what it might have felt like to sit in on a jazz gig in the 60s in the states. There's even a whole track of McCann telling the crowd a long joke.

Day 2: Bollywood music
#14daysofmusicchallenge

I must confess, I know virtually zero Bollywood songs. But in Melbourne here, we have this great band, The Bombay Royale. This is a song they released last year, with a killer video: Henna Henna.

As for the song itself, I like the surf groove most out of anything else the song has to offer. The chorus hook is cool too. I like the suspense of the opening section.
