“The Tank And The Furious: Moscow Drift” (http://gplnk.co/2fTSRxF)

Here is a seriously high #energy way to finish off the week!

We have all seen films within the famous ‘Fast And The Furious’ franchise and gazed longingly at the cars. What most of us would give to be able to drift a luxury race car around the streets along side Vin Diesel. However, this is not the reality for most of us.

This has led some car enthusiasts to come up with a creative way to fulfil their fantasy.

Forget Tokyo Drift! What about Moscow Drift?

A video of a tank in Russia drifting like a scene out of the ‘Fast And The Furious’ movies has hit the internet. Our friends at +Road & Track fortunately shared the video!

Developed during the 1980s, the T-80UD main battle tank was designed to fight NATO on the battlefields of World War III. Weighing 46 tons and armed with a 125-millimeter smoothbore gun, it was a formidable opponent.

Until recently, large numbers still served in the Russian Army.

Russia's tank force is largely staffed by teenagers drafted to serve their country for 12-month terms. The T-80UD has a manual transmission.

Maybe you can see where this is going.

And I thought I was being a rebel peeling out in a Honda when I was a teenager!

The Most Deadliest Cars (https://goo.gl/zRK9Ly)

No, this isn't a bad #horror movie film title, unfortunately. For as much as we love to consider our vehicles, there are always tough lessons to learn for manufacturers.

Remember the Ford Pinto?

It is an unfortunate fact of life that not all cars are safe. Some cars are designed for speed over safety for example. If you're in the market for a new car, or "new to you" car, it is important to look into safety ratings when you are looking to purchase a new car.

So which cars are seen as the most unsafe?

Of the seven cars that are ranked as the most unsafe all are small or mini cars. This might not come as a surprise to many people. However the list put together by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Study might help you narrow down your current search.

CBS News reported on the new study and the seven most unsafe cars and what the cars with the highest fatality ratings are:

Of the seven worst, the Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio and Toyota Scion tC all have over 100 driver fatalities per million registered vehicle years. (A registered vehicle year is one vehicle registered for one year). The next four vehicles on the worst list -- the Chevrolet Spark, Nissan Versa, Ford Fiesta sedan and the Kia Soul -- all have fatality rates over 80

By contrast, 11 vehicles -- mostly large and midsize cars and SUVs -- have zero fatalities by the same measure

The Most Beautiful Cars in the World (https://goo.gl/da3OKE)

People often talk about #art. Whether it is paintings, sculptures or literature many people appreciate art. However, art can be anything. Take cars for example. They are not just a way to get from point A to point B.

For the luxury cars the design and engineering are a work of art!

I think that beautiful cars can qualify as a work of art; I'd guess many of you who follow this page would agree!

Don’t believe me? Well luckily Business Insider agrees and put together a list of the top ten most beautiful cars for 2017. For me the Alfa Romeo tops the list of the most beautiful car:

Alfa Romeo Giulia: In a world filled with anonymous car design, Alfa Romeo refuses to blend into the crowd. And that certainly holds true for its new Giulia sedan.

In the hotrod Giulia Quadrifoglio, the memorable looks start with Alfa's signature triangle grille and capped off by a curvaceous rear end with quad exhausts and a massive diffuser.

This list might not make you want to run out to your nearest art gallery, but it might make you want to rob a bank to afford one. Not that I recommend that you do! Like all good art, beautiful cars are sometimes best admired from afar.

The Best Cars: Seniors Edition (https://goo.gl/vk5Lvh)

When it comes to #car #design, most manufacturers wouldn't shoot for creating the best environment for older folks. After all, the brand new Alfa Romeo doesn’t want to be seen as the "safest" old folks mobile.

Yet, senior drivers are a growing market in the US with a 50% increase in seniors staying on the road between 1995 and 2015.

After all, you don’t just lose interest in cars once you reach the age of 65 right?

So if there is this growing trend in seniors driving, then what are the best cars for them? CNN Money put together an article about this very topic. Based on the Consumer Report five key cars were found to be the most senior friendly:

The five that stood out as the very best were the Subaru Forester, Subaru Outback, Kia Soul, Subaru Legacy and Kia Sportage. Among the other vehicles in the list were the Ford Escape, Nissan Rogue, Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Santa Fe.

Finding the right car for a senior is an important aspect of keeping both the driver and other cars safe on the road.

BMW’s Vision of the Future (https://goo.gl/WOXgQh)

The German car #manufacturing company #BMW has launched their vision for the future of automobiles. BMW’s line of concept vehicles showcase how cars will change in the next 100 years.

We have to say, with some of these photos, if feels like the cars of the future are already here.

The line titled ‘Vision Next 100’ features three cars and two motorcycles that showcase self driving capabilities and are electric powered. The cars feature steering wheels that will retract into the dashboard when on self driving mode!

Although BMW has stated that they don’t intend to create any of the futuristic vehicles they sure provide an interesting insight into the potential future of automobiles.

Business Insider wrote an article all about these new cars of the future that BMW have designed. Here is what BMW envision the new generation of motorcycle scooters to be like:

The German automaker seems particular committed to designing the motorcycle of the future. On Friday, BMW unveiled a new, all-electric scooter concept.

The scooter features two touchscreens. The one in-between the handle bars shows the driver battery information, navigation, and speed. The display directly below the handle bars handles secondary information, like music options.

The bike comes with a complimentary jacket that can activate a secret luggage door.

Firestone Destination Off-Road Review (https://goo.gl/7iFiMw)

As #car buffs, we are guilty of obsessing over the body and the engine of a rig more often than the tires - but tires need respect too!

In fact, we'll call today "Tire Appreciation" day here at Hands On Tools. As part of the celebration, we thought sharing an article from Motor Trend about their review of the off-road Firestone's would be a nice way to help everyone appreciate the part of the car that actually helps it go!

Mounted on the provided Jeep Wrangler Rubicon test vehicle, the new tire enhanced that truck’s already rugged looks. The tires naturally improved off-road performance, as well. Even at the OEM-recommended tire pressures, the M/T2s showed good rock-crawling ability on a dry, boulder-strewn trail. Grip was just as good in a watery mud pit composed of different terrain types, including rocks and sticky Virginia clay.

Those are some burly off-roaders! You can click on the link above to read more from the article and view a few of their pictures.

And make sure you head over to Hands On Tools next time you need to stock up on tools and equipment to keep your wheels and tires running as intended. Our website is here: (https://goo.gl/h7CeVc)

Sourcing components for "American" made cars (https://gplnk.me/2mg6i1f)

Depending on who you ask, there's a sense of pride that comes from owning and driving an #American made vehicle. Supporting local workers and being part of an American tradition can be extremely satisfying for some enthusiasts.

But as diligent consumers, we also have to be aware of where the lines cross between marketing and fact. In particular, we're talking about just how much of your "American" made car actually is made in the country.

An interesting article on this very subject was recently published in TIME Magazine.

The 2017 Ford Fiesta is used as an example in the piece, discussing an American car that is actually assembled in Mexico, with a Brazilian engine and transmission also from Mexico.

So there does the distinction between a foreign and domestic vehicle actually lie? Well the answer is more complicated than we can fit into a post today, but we did want to share some highlights from the article:

While Trump has pressured companies to keep their assembly plants in America, federal data shows a clear trend: the number of car parts that come from the U.S. and Canada is on the wane, as the job of building those parts goes instead to countries like Mexico and Hungary. As recently as 10 years ago, several cars got at least 90% of their parts from U.S. and Canada, according to Frank DuBois, creator of American University's Made In America Auto Index. This year, no car received more than 75% of its parts from the two countries, he said.

Check out more from the article through the link above, and you can even plug in your make and model to see the percentage of your car that's actually made in America.

A Car's Eye View (https://goo.gl/fT7p2e)

Have you ever wanted to know what the #road looks like from your car’s point of view? Well for the average car, the only way to do that is to strap a GoPro to the front bumper. Or to simply stare out of the windshield as your drive.

However, what about the view that an above average car has? What about self driving cars?

That's right, we can now see what self driving cars see! How cool is that?

The New York Times put together an article about this new self driving technology and how it is helping to give us a car’s eye view of the road:

Lidar — pronounced LIE-dar — is shorthand for light detection and ranging. It is a type of sensor that is at the heart of many autonomous car designs and is critical to several worldwide high-resolution mapping efforts. The same technology is used to delineate terrain from airplanes and detect speeding violations.

The advantage of lidar is that it can generate precise three-dimensional images of everything from cars to trees to cyclists in a variety of environments and under a variety of lighting conditions. While autonomous car designs use numerous sensors, including ultrasonic, radar and video camera components, lidar has unique abilities. Unlike cameras, for example, lidar cannot be fooled by shadows or blinded by bright sunlight.

Click the link above to read the full article and to find out more about this interesting new technology:

This technology might still be a long way away from being economically viable, but it's still cool conceptually, that we can see the world through a self driving cars eyes.
