Urologist Loses Lawsuit for Removing Wrong Testicle

Wrong-site surgery is one of those medical errors that should never occur, because when it does, according to federal health regulators, it usually signals a set of serious underlying safety problems.
Thankfully, cases in which #doctors operate on the wrong body part are extremely rare, occurring only once in every 112,994 procedures, according to a 2006 study supported by the US Agency for #Healthcare Research and Quality. But rare doesn't mean never, as made clear by a June 18 Washington Post story about a man who had the wrong testicle removed...

Roughly 2 million boxes of macaroni and cheese are sold in the United States everyday.
Is the childhood favorite safe to eat?

Chemicals called #phthalates, that were found in teething rings and rubber duckies were banned 10 years ago, yet are still present in high concentrations in powdered cheese. These phthalates, 'can disrupt male hormones like #testosterone and have been linked to genital birth defects in #infant #boys and learning and behavior problems in older children.'

#FDA deal would relax rules on reporting #medical device problems even though mishaps are already vastly under reported. Currently, agencies must report problems within 30 days. However, under the new bill, report requirements would increase to three months.

Preemies being cared for in the neonatal intensive care units are typically treated with many different antibiotics, anesthetics, narcotics and diuretics, 90% of which have not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. This is not just a problem here in Boston at some of the best children's hospitals in the United States, but all over the world. #Pharmaceutical companies are hesitant to test their medications on #infants due to the risks and liability.

Find out which #Boston #hospital is working to change this practice by conducting clinical trials in the #NICU.

It might not be long before machines begin thinking for themselves -- creatively, independently, and sometimes with better judgment than a human. Charlie Rose reports.

Would you approve of a robot outlining your #cancer treatment?

Compounding center co-owner should pay $132.8m for meningitis outbreak, US says

'The sentencing hearing has begun in the case of Barry J. Cadden, the former co-owner and head pharmacist of a Framingham company that caused a nationwide fungal #meningitis outbreak that killed dozens of people.

#Cadden was convicted in March of fraud and racketeering charges stemming from a public #health #crisis triggered when NECC sent tainted medicines around the country, killing at least 60 and sickening hundreds more.'

Clinic ordered to pay out almost $29 million in compensation for failing to diagnose Wilson's disease in a timely manner, preventing further complications and health problems. Wilson's disease is a rare generic disorder that causes copper to build up in the vital organs, primarily the brain and liver. For five months, Emilee Williams suffered with tetraplegia, speech impairment, muscle spasms, dysarthria, dystopia, and dysphasia - all ignored by her doctors. Williams now eats through a feeding tube and will never walk again.
