Interesting, But Not More - Review of Mockingjay Part 1
The Hunger Games (2012) was a decent movie (goo.gl/5LFLsf), The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) was a significant improvement (goo.gl/QSkS7x), and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 (2014) was an interesting movie, though not much more than that.

Part 1 of Mockingjay is different from the first two movies in many ways - though then again, so was Cathing Fire in comparison to the first movie. As a movie, Mockingjay is quite good - though I wouldn't say that it was better than Catching Fire. There are introduced a lot of very interesting ideas, storylines, and concepts, which I have to say were the parts of the movie that I enjoyed the most. This is a movie right on the border between a good concept/script and good execution of that concept/script. Without one, the other would have been acceptable, but not much more. This movie achieves both - but does not go above and beyond in any capacity in doing so.

Fortunately, Mockingjay manages to live up to its script and tell its story in a good way. Unfortunately, Mockingjay doesn't do much more than simply tell a good story in a good way. The movie doesn't excel on any level beyond telling its story in a honorable way. Everything it does well it only does slightly above average. I'm not disappointed - quite on the contrary; this movie was far better than I expected, which again doesn't say a whole damn lot.

Overall: great concept, interesting story, honorable execution, and still somehow felt flat to me.
