Stupidly Entertaining - Review of Barely Lethal
Right off the bat I have to admit that Barely Lethal (2015) is several kinds of stupid; some would even call it downright ridiculous. But you what? It didn't bother me - at all. The movie does so much right that its ridiculous premise and way of telling its story didn't hurt the movie, but actually helped make it fun and lighthearted. Heck, even the name of the movie is a pun - and far from the only pun in the movie. Still, it all worked - just as such ridiculousness worked in Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014), D.E.B.S. (2004), Bring It On (2000), and Pitch Perfect (2012) - despite all these movies being vastly different (and all movies that I very much enjoy).

Barely Lethal is a movie about teenage assassins and a struggle to survive in the scariest of places - American high school. If that didn't sound cheesy enough, then know that the tagline for Barely Lethal is: "Click. Clique. Bang." And, no, this is not a slapstick comedy in any way. The genre is a bit difficult to explain, though I think I can describe this movie is as the Mean Girls of the teenage assassin world. Yes, I think I'll go with that.

On paper, Barely Lethal is a terrible movie. However - I really, really liked it. I found it greatly entertaining, with interesting characters, great acting, stupidly fun story, and surprisingly decent writing. I expected this movie to be a so-bad-it's-good movie, but it turned out to a genuinely good movie - at least for me.
