What is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is a procedure that removes stains and discoloration from teeth.

Discoloration can be the result of a combination of things:

genetics
poor oral hygiene
accidents
medication
the effects of aging
smoking
certain foods.

Whitening techniques will only work for staining caused by some medications if the discoloration is very mild. Teeth that are discolored because of medication or excessive fluoride are not good candidates for the whitening procedure. Veneers are the best solution for more severe discoloration cases. Once you reach our office, our dentist will let you know the best solution for you.
We can change all this and give you a “Movie Star” smile within one hour.

First, we check the teeth for cavities as the whitening gel can cause serious damage if it leaks into these areas. If cavities are found, they must be repaired before tooth whitening takes place. If there are no cavities, we will begin the whitening process. The process is quick, easy, and comfortable. Under the dentists’ supervision, our whitening treatments are completely safe and will not harm teeth or gums.
Zoom Teeth Whitening ZOOM! In Office Whitening Procedure

We are delighted to offer our patients the latest in whitening procedures. The Zoom! In-Office Whitening System is a revolutionary tooth whitening procedure. It’s safe effective and very fast.

First we will begin by removing the plaque that has built up along the gum line.
Then, a protective covering will be placed over your gums to protect the soft tissue from the bleaching agent.
Then, we will apply the whitening gel to your teeth.
A light will be pointed at your teeth to activate the bleaching agent.
The gel is a scientifically formulated, pH balanced Hydrogen Peroxide that, when activated by the Zoom! light, gently penetrates the teeth to remove deep stains and discoloration. With proper care and an occasional touch-up at home, your whiter smile will sparkle for years.

In just under an hour, your teeth will be dramatically whiter. Zoom! Whitening is ideal for anyone looking for immediate results. The convenience of Zoom! in comparison to days of wearing trays and gradual whitening makes it the perfect choice for the busy patient.

Other whitening systems don’t compare to the Zoom! Chairside Whitening System. Nothing whitens better or faster.
Take-Home Teeth WhiteningTake Home Teeth Whitening

Under the supervision of our dentist, our whitening treatments are completely safe and will not harm teeth or gums. Using our custom made trays and eight tubes of solution, our whitening system lasts a long time. This means you will experience very little whitening loss over time if you maintain good dental habits.

First an impression of your teeth will be taken. It will be used as a mold to make custom whitening trays that look like a mouth guard.
When the whitening trays are ready you will have another appointment to test if the trays fit properly to the teeth.
Instructions will be provided on how to use the trays in conjunction with the whitening gel.
The peroxide whitening gel is placed into the custom trays at home and worn for a certain amount of time each day (usually twice a day for 30 minutes to 2 hours for a 2 to 4 week period).
The custom-made tray minimizes the bleaching gel’s contact with the gum tissue.

The advantage of using dentist-supervised bleaching is that teeth can be properly assessed to have the correct chemical concentration, correct method and length of treatment and to be sure the patient is even suitable to have their teeth whitened.

Inlays / Onlays / White Fillings

Inlays and Onlays are restorations that are made to rear teeth that have a mild to moderate amount of decay. They are made of composite resin material, porcelain, or gold by a dental laboratory. Once completed, they will be bonded to the tooth.

an inlay fills a hole inside the tooth
an onlay sits on top of the tooth to build up its shape.

They can also be used to:

Restore teeth that are cracked or fractured if the damage is not severe enough to require a dental crown.
Replace metal fillings for patients who desire a more natural looking smile.
Their use helps to conserve much of the natural tooth structure.

inlayonlayTreatment

Treatment involves isolating the tooth and removing any old fillings or damaged tooth structure under local anesthesia. An impression of the tooth is made, then the inlay or onlay is created from porcelain, gold, or composite resin material. The inlay/onlay is cemented securely into place. Adjustments may be made to ensure the tooth is comfortable to bite on.
Benefits of Inlays / Onlays / White Fillings

In treating dental decay, inlays and onlays help to eliminate tooth sensitivity and eventual tooth loss. Inlays and onlays also offer the following benefits:

Made from tooth-colored material, inlays and onlays are virtually invisible.
Unlike metal fillings, inlays and onlays will not expand or contract in response to temperature changes caused by hot or cold foods diminishing the possibility of fracture.
Inlays and onlays requires less tooth reduction than metal fillings allowing the dentist to conserve more natural tooth structure.
The durable material from which inlays and onlays are made helps them last up to 30 years, much longer than that of conventional amalgam fillings.
Inlays and onlays can replace silver fillings to create a healthier, more natural-looking smile.
By saving decayed teeth, inlays and onlays prevent the need for more extensive treatment later on.

Inlays and onlays usually take 2-3 appointments.

Contact us today to schedule an appointment to get an opinion on your need for an inlay or onlay.

What are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are often referred to “Instant Orthodontics”. Think you need braces? A substantial aesthetic effect can be obtained with a veneer and minimal tooth preparation is required.

A dental veneer is a thin layer of synthetic material (porcelain or composite) that is bonded to the tooth’s surface. Veneers are a great alternative to otherwise painful dental procedures to improve the appearance of your smile.
Common problems that Veneers will address:

Spaces between the teeth
Broken or chipped teeth
Permanently stained or discolored teeth
Crooked or misshapen teeth

Veneers are applied to the teeth in 2 visits to the dentist:

Visit # 1 Veneer Preparation: The teeth are prepared by removing 0.3 to 0.5 mm of enamel (the thickness of a fingernail) to allow room for the veneer layer. An impression of the teeth is taken and sent to the specialized dental laboratory that will create the veneers.
Visit #2 Veneer Bonding: Bonding involves all the steps that permanently attach the veneer to the tooth. After a cleaning of the tooth, the veneer is bonded to the tooth with a special dental cement. This dental cement is then hardened with a blue curing light.
