Stepped out yesterday afternoon to get my bike repaired and saw a bunch of helicopters in the sky and in the distance there was a bunch of smoke rising in the area around the towering Harukas building. Turns out there was a roaring housefire next to Horigoshi Shrine (check the video in the link). I pass by here once a week when going to meet my tutor student. :O

Huge props to Sun Creature Studio for hitting all the right Ghibli visual references to make my home state of Oregon look as magical as it feels! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXRBLyQQ78A

(2 of 2) Meanwhile, Mary and I marked the event (unwittingly of the date's significance when we made the plans) by visiting the Abeno Life Safety Center for a disaster training course.

It was much different than we expected, I figured we'd be in a dull meeting room sitting at a table and taking notes as a group, but there was actually a substantial tour that was a good mix of attention-grabbing fluff and substantial experiences & info. At two points in the tour they had earthquake simulators so you could experience different magnitudes, a session of applying improvised tourniquets and bone-settings and even this super-realistic earthquake-stricken neighborhood.

Did I mention this was on the 3rd floor of the building? Much like the awesome Museum of Housing and Living that I did a post about (http://hair-flap.com/2016/05/11/a-1800s-era-village-in-an-office-building/), Osaka seems to be big into recreating parts of itself indoors.

Anyway, it was awesome, totally recommend it to anyone local. You'll probably learn at least a little something, and get to experience a couple risk-free earthquakes at the very least.
