Helping your Companions

Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (radi Allahu anhu) reported: While we were travelling with the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam), a rider came and began to stare on the right and on the left. The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam), said, “He who has an extra mount should hand it over to one who has none, and he who possesses surplus provision, should give it to him who is without provision.” He named various kinds of possessions until we began to think (realise) that none of us had any right to anything surplus.

[Sahih Muslim]

Appointing a leader when travelling

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “When three persons set out on a journey, they should appoint one of them as their leader.”

[Sunan Abu Dawud]

Commentary:

We benefit from the above Hadith that It is mustahabb (recommended) for the group to appoint the best and wisest of their number as their leader, and to obey him.

Choosing anyone as leader means that a journey should be undertaken under his guidance and instructions. This has many benefits.

The person to be appointed as a leader over a group of travelers should fulfill certain important conditions, including the fact that he should be the most knowledgeable in religious matters and travelling conditions.

And Allah knows best!

Educating women

Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (radi Allahu anhu) reported: A woman came to the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) and said: “O Messenger of Allah! Only men benefit from your talks, so please fix a day for us, to teach us the knowledge which Allah has taught you.” The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) fixed a day and directed them to assemble. When they gathered, the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) went to them and taught them what Allah had taught him. He (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) then said, “Any woman of you whose three children die (in infancy) they will be a guard for her against the Fire (of Hell).” One of the women asked: “What if she loses two?” The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) replied, “Even two.”

Any Muslim who loses three children

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “Any Muslim who loses three children before they reach the age of maturity, will be granted Jannah by Allah, the Exalted, out of His Mercy for them.”

[Sahih Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Commentary:

We benefit from the above Hadith that the person, who patiently endures the loss of their children and expects reward from Allah, will enjoy the privilege of being granted Jannah (paradise) by Allah.

Allah will have mercy on such people and admit them into Jannah owing to His Mercy towards these innocent children.

And Allah knows best!

Praising the Deceased

Anas (radi Allahu anhu) reported: Some Companions happened to pass by a funeral procession (bier) and they praised him (the deceased). The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “He will certainly enter it.” Then they passed by another funeral procession and they spoke ill of the deceased. The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “He will certainly enter it.” ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab (radi Allahu anhu) said: “(O Messenger of Allah,) what do you mean by ‘He will certainly enter it?” He (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) replied, “You praised the first person, so he will enter Jannah; and you spoke ill of the second person, so he will enter Hell. You are Allah’s witnesses on earth.”

Charity on behalf of the Deceased

Aishah (radi Allahu anha) reported: A man said to the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam): “My mother has died suddenly. I think that if she were able to talk (alive) she would have given in Sadaqah (charity). So, if I give Sadaqah now on her behalf, will she get the reward?” The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “Yes (she will be rewarded for that).”

Encamping during a journey

Abu Qatadah (radi Allahu anhu) reported: When the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) encamped at night during a journey, he would lie down on his right side, and when he stayed a little before dawn he would raise his forearm and place his head on the palm of his hand.

[Sahih Muslim]

Commentary:

This Hadith tells us that we should be fully regardful of the performance of prayer, particularly during a journey. We must make sure we perform prayer at the right time.

And Allah knows best!

Traveling alone at night

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “Were people to know of what I know about the dangers of travelling alone, no rider would travel alone at night.”

[Sahih Al-Bukhari]

Commentary:

We benefit from the above Hadith that travelling alone in whatever form it may be is not recommended at night and can cause many inconveniences. These inconveniences include deprivation of performing congregational prayers, feelings of loneliness and isolation and facing unexpected situations and damages. But the real reasons behind this, only Allah truly knows.

And Allah knows best!

Losing three children

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “A Muslim whose three children die (in infancy) will not be touched by the Fire (of Hell) except for the fulfillment of Allah’s Oath.”

[Sahih Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

(Allah’s Oath here refers to His saying (interpretation of the meaning): “There is not one of you but will cross over it (Hell).” (19:71) And the crossing will be across the ‘Bridge’ set over the Hell)

When man dies

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “When a man dies, his deeds come to an end, except for three: A continuous charity, knowledge by which people derive benefit and a pious son who prays for him.”

The Pious and Evil Corpse

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “When a dead body is placed on a bier and men carry it on their shoulders, if he was a pious man, it (the corpse) says: ‘Take me in haste.’ But if he was not righteous, it says to its bearers: ‘Woe to it. Where are you taking it?’ Everything except man hears its voice. Had a human being heard its voice, he would have surely fallen into swoon (lost consciousness).”

[Sahih Al-Bukhari]

Commentary:

Only Allah knows the reality as to how a dead body speaks. However, no improbability is involved in this matter. Allah is empowered to let any dead body speak if He so likes. We must believe it on the authority of authentic Ahadith.

And Allah knows best!

Crying without wailing

Anas (radi Allahu anhu) reported: The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) came to his son Ibrahim when he was breathing his last (breath). The eyes of the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) began shedding tears. ‘Abdur-Rahman bin ‘Auf (radi Allahu anhu) said, “O Messenger of Allah, you too weep?” He (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “O Ibn ‘Auf! It is mercy.” Then he began to weep and said, “The eyes are shedding tears and the heart is grieved, and we will not say except what pleases our Rubb (Lord). O Ibrahim! Indeed we are grieved by your departure.”
