Traveling through the Canadian National Parks for their 150th year celebration requires you to bear a lot of roadside animals. If you think that would make you feel sheepish, check out our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/HSykesPhoto #photography #nationalpark #blackbear

Space Exploration at its Best
This was the NASA launch control room used during the project Apollo program. The program used Saturn rockets to land astronauts on the moon and return them safely to earth. Note the lab coats on many of the chairs from major contractors like McDonnell Douglas, Boeing, and IBM, with IBM having the most or 6 jackets. #nasa #ibm

I was delighted to photograph the Aluminum Company’s Open House today.

They provided food, snacks and lunch, door prizes, including renovation work, and a fully-staffed showroom to answer anyone’s exterior home improvement questions. If you’ve not been there, the final day of the Open House is tomorrow Saturday, September 19th 8am till 4pm. Go visit them, I’m sure you will be pleased!
I’ve even been so impressed with their quality and extremely high customer satisfaction ratings that I chose them for my personal home projects, and I’m very pleased with that decision.

Vehicle fire and safety tips

HSykesPhoto pictures of a tractor-trailer fire along I-95 have been posted by a Savannah TV station on their website at http://wsav.com/2015/08/20/photo-gallery-tractor-trailer-fire-on-i95/

Safety tips from a retired fire chief to help in the unlikely event you experience a vehicle fire:

- Act quickly when you first notice smoke, its smell or visible flames. Pulling well off the road onto the shoulder or median may prevent a secondary accident and injuries. Once there, shut the engine off.

- Your first priority should be to get you and all passengers safely away from the fire. Don’t expect the type of explosion often seen in Hollywood productions; however, don’t underestimate how quickly fire can expand or how quickly toxic smoke can hurt you. Both are common causes of injuries.

- Make sure 9-1-1 is called first. When the fire is just starting, it can be put out with a handheld fire extinguisher. Doing so can significantly reduce the amount of damage done since fire damages can increase significantly during the time it takes the fire department to arrive. Practice using a fire extinguisher before you need it greatly increases its effectiveness. (Many fire departments will provide instruction in using fire extinguishers.) Do not perform acts you feel unsafe or uncomfortable performing!

- Move at least 100’ away from a vehicle fire. For example, while I was photographing the subject fire, the tires exploded (a common occurrence with a fully involved vehicle fire). Shrapnel from the tires can hurt you and at the very least will cause your heart to miss a beat. The shock-absorbing struts built into many bumpers can explode during a fire, turning the bumper into a missile that will severely injury people in its path.  Never return to a vehicle on fire.

Independence Day Fireworks

I hope you had a great Independence Day weekend and saw some good fireworks, but just in case you didn’t I’ve attached a fireworks photograph. The fireworks were over Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Florida and photographed from the beach area near the Jupiter Reef Club by the Atlantic Ocean.
