A carefully cut-up video, and then loads of practice to move the phones to the right position at just the right time.

With a little knowledge of video editing and scripting, it is very doable. The difficult part was the choreography to shoot the final video. GREAT IDEA and awesome video! Love the out-takes at the end.

Blue screen phones would work - do all of the phone movement, then overlay the film onto the bluescreens (or green) and it looks like the phones are doing it.

Either that or some VERY clever and coordinated choreography.

I think it is quite amazing tho' :-)

Very creative. It's certainly not chroma-key approach, but I'm not sure it's +Gerwin Sturm's approach either. Perhaps a video was split into 4 equal parts and saved as separate 4 videos. Then each one was played on a particular phone simultaneously... that would likely create the effect they achieved. But whatever it was - very creative and well done.

was already done in the past with digital signage software (for example Sony Ziris or others)

Tight video! Had to be put together by Random Chance...

I agree with +Age Black , you give the phones a transparency color, then place this video over the video being portrayed 'on the phones'.

They sliced up the video (in most parts) into 4 videos and created a formation script. They memorized the formations according to the music - like playing a new instrument. Pretty cool idea.

I hope that is a legit video...
I find it amazing! And resharing it!

+Age Black +John MacIntyre -- I don't think it's bluescreen: the lineup is good but not perfect -- there are moments where one phone is slightly but visibly misaligned.

+Rahul Siddharthan it definitely could be real ... but when you compare the complexity of doing this with the easy way +Age Black & I describe, it almost seams like a tragedy to do it the way it looks like it was done.

Of course, it is a legit video. The question is how it was made.

I discussed this post with 1 person in a hangout.

+Blair Warner It's an app. Basically you all download the app to your phones then you all aim your cameras at a qr code or something like that then you all can view a video stream with multiple phones. I believe MIT or one of the top universities came out with it. I have been looking for the app for a few months because when I saw it I was blown away. This is the first time I have seen anyone use it for a music video. It isn't available i the app store fyi.

Did they really break one of the iphones at the end?

Great job. Must have taken a while to perfect it.

I discussed this post with 1 person in a hangout.

you really shouldn't be in a hangout:(

As some people ave noted, the making of video at the end explains it - They used software to split to four videos then made 200 takes :P

that is AWESOME! So funny when he dropped the phone!hahaha!soz, shouldnt laugh!:-D

i thought iphone glasses are made of gorilla corning glasses

This is really great! Thank you for sharing!

Very nicely done!
Now what would be really nice, is to use the accelerometer and compass, so that no matter how you move the phones, the video would pan and rotate accordingly. ;-)

I wonder if they have any extra iPhones :) This is amazing!

Fabulous sense of timing and beat. very good.

The broken iPhone joke at the end makes me suspicious of the chatter at the start about "Take Number 238"...

It might have been done for real, +Guy Kawasaki, but I would bet the screen images were applied to the 'phones in post-production.

Wow, this is an awesome video. It rocks gotta re-share. :-)

That is so coool!! How did they do it exactly?

I LOVE Mystery Guitar Man! He does videos like this all of the time. He is extremely talented. If you don't follow him on YouTube, you really need to.

Love it!!

must hav took a while, but id b very proud. Kinda inspires u 2 try do smting original. Well done.

Horrible choice of typography. Brilliant otherwise!

It would be more awesome if they used androids. And the phone would not have broken had they not been using worthless iPhones.

How cool! I wish I could share this on Facebook. Great job.

How did they do that THAT WAS AWESOME WHO'S PHONE CRACKED!!! HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAH Not mine

I would be mad at that guy for breaking my iphone.

YOU ARE ALWAYS RUNNING YOUR MOUTHH

:D Do you really think they shot the videos with the 4 iPhones?! It is probably 1 video (the background) and another one in the foreground, with holes on the iPhone screens...

Woahhhhhhhhh.... I could never EVER do that :) I wonder if they all had iPhones before or if they bought them just to make the video :D

I've dropped my Samsung Galaxy S2 face down 10 ft. high on cement and it didn't even scratch the screen but in did a little bit on the top part of the phone that wasn't the screen.

People keep commenting on how they did that.. really? How they did it is really not that confusing or impressive..

The time, effort and creativity is what is really IMPRESSIVE!

Kudos gentlemen and its awesome to see you guys having fun doing it.

And just think, they are still trying to pass regulation that can make this kind of greatness illegal.

cool!!!!!!!!! That is so awesome! I never knew you could do that! Who did that? AWESOME!

This is nice. I am glad it was brought it to my attention.

how did they do that it is intteligent

I'm still impressed ! Job well done guys !!! :)

idk but thats so kool
ha they cracked the screen

someone with way too much time on their hands

they used a GREEN SCREEN or ........

DOWNLOADED AN APP

That was unbelievable!!! Bravo!!!

OHH!!! I think they just took videos of each section with very very very precise timing and just stuck them all together during the video. must be really hard.

+Alanna Tran +Guy Kawasaki I actually know +Joe Penna. They really did do this in over 200+ takes, and this final video was all in ONE take after trying it over and over. Dude is not only patient, but a genius. :)

:)) ... wtf ...Ashley you think iPhone is the best? do not think so .... is indeed a good phone but not the only phone that can do that ... and if you were really careful look at your best video clip at the end of the phone and he falls and breaks ... so do not tell you that you can do anything with it ... and srry for my english

I looked I just ... and unfortunately I could not find

lol with the phone breaking and very cool

that was sooo cool! but it took ALOT of takes!

When I was scrolling through I saw a Iphones and pressed play Then I was stunned with awesomeness

Lol broken iPhone at the end. Wouldn't have happened with a Galaxy S2

do you reckon the 2:41 phone drop and crack was staged with an already broken phone? as it disappears off the top of the screen and comes back broken. coz it wasnt dropped from very high or hard.. if the drop isnt faked then I agree with +David Perez

Awww....... Wat a Super-trooper.... Tqvm.... U guyz r awesome.... Me really2x do njoyd it vm. It put a smile on my face yo. Excellente! & well dun.

Same question here, how the hell did they do this? it's amazing.

Nice, but someone has no cell phone anymore!

they must have put some time in to it :D

+john chares if this is all it takes to break an iphone leave it on the i-store i-shelth for some other i-diot to get robbed

If I were well organized and coordinated, I would have planned and choreographed the whole thing and then executed it with great care taking hundreds of takes. I think that's what they did.

Because I'm not that talented, I would have had all four of the phones displaying green screens and manipulated everything in post production.

Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
COOL

that must of been hard to do the position at the right time

it must be some kinda wizardry... :p

I wonder how long it took for them to get the video and sync right... as in days wise
Translate

look up the "making of" video and you'll find out.

That's really cool. They probably weren't kidding when they said "Take 238" at the beginning.

when he said ryan did he mean Ryan HIGA??

you want to know how they do it? easy... some people have toooooo much time on their hands. well done.
Kassy G

poor guy his iPhone screen is totally broken:(

With 238 takes... At first I thought green screen, but I saw mistakes here and there. And the fail video at the end tells the story... Pretty cool, ill be resharing!

wat a synchrony!!!!!!!!!!!!superb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that is amazing! I can't believe it was that long and accurate

AWEOME!!!!!!! but i think it did'nt really break they probably stuck something on

Nice. Tanks god we have people spending time on those things...

You can see the making of this on youtube too. Even a video of them moving them along with the original too. Just hit up their channel. It's pretty cool and pretty easy to make.

AWESOME!! :D How DID they do that? :/ I wonder...

Great video but would someone please "set that song on FIYA!"?

Choreography and video editing? simple.
Ever purchasing 4 over-priced apple products? wreckless and stupid

hi im sally. :] so nice to talk to you over da compooter.

+Guy Kawasaki, +Antonio Tauro have linked to the making of the video in this tread 1 hour ago, found the movie cool when I first saw it a couple of nights ago..Mysteryguitar havent got the fame he deservs...He have produced a lot of greate videoes since he entered youtube:-)

Mystery Guitar Man is a brilliant artist. His concepts and executions are always clever.

That AMAZING how did they do that?

4 people + WAY too much free time = this video

omg!!! That is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo cool!!

Very Cool Loved It ;-)

LOL FAIL at the end (the part where they broke the phone) xD

they programed the phone they did that not the phone they turned it to do that thay did all that

I wonder how long it took them to perfect this?

what wow? stupid green screen trick, CGI work :) Avatar was wow this is bullshit

They have no jobs so they have plenty of time to sing songs and play with their toys.

This is really awesome, but really who the fuck has this kind of time on their hands????

I hate that they cut right after the phone busted, I would love to here the reaction. I love that though, it looks so hard but if you watch the bts its quite simple to create. Harder to present.

It's clearly not green-screen, watch the top-right phone @ 2.03. The image flips before he flips the phone....... Stop hating, this is impressive choreography.

that must took about 3 weeks to have all the phones to do that. It must be some app, but it was still really cool

What's worse is when you try to think how they worked it out, then your brain starts to turn to jelly. Just brilliant!

This is so super cool... I don't know how they did it but is wicked.

Would have been so much better with an HTC or SG3

That is an amazing piece of work!

That is wonderful piece of creativity

You should check out mysteryguitarman's YouTube channel. This video is one of many great creative shorts he's filmed with his producer and wife Sarah Penna.

They did say take 200 something, I think they just have too much time on their hands

I call that a lot of practice until you get it right after the 238 takes.

With a lot of patience and a lot of takes haha

^ Mind Fucked!
Jk broski <3 Love you man. or girl? Whatever you are, I still love you:*

really! how did they do it?!?! :)

This would be easy to do. You have a offscreen render layer... then just mask over the smartphone screens...

I don't know but it is cool :)

Separate videos played together on 4 phones

Wow that is AMAZING that people could do that! Did his phone actually crack at the end?
Susie E

How Do You Do That?!?!? :0

1. cover your mouth with your hand.
2. whisper a wish in your hand
3. post this on three other comments.
4. look at your hand

coool i want 2 learn how 2 do that ; }

i like this vidieo puzzle and song
congrulation
^_^

They must be really patient. I would be tearing my hair out if I had to do 200 plus takes. >.<

Or, have green screens on each phone and then play with After Effects.

It is cool, but not so amazing to be thought fake. Besides that this was already done in a TedTalk, the practice it takes, while intense, is no more intense than learning a three minute choreographed dance routine.

+Guy Kawasaki Thank you for sharing; this work is awesome!!
It gives you the drive to think of the possible ways of doing it, how clever they are, and whether you can do something better or even similar!
So People! Stop hating it! Because whether it is real or not, trick or true, that is ART!

Duh, it's MysteryGuitarMan's video! :P

Lol that was cool I had to lol about the screen tho

very cool! I liked it so much.

You could make this in like a day via After Effects.

its easy just stick green paper on the iposds screen and greenscreen the content in later. still a nice ideer.

Give me a second I,
I need to get my story straight
My friends are in the bathroom getting higher than the Empire State
My lover she’s waiting for me just across the bar
My seat’s been taken by some sunglasses asking bout a scar, and
I know I gave it to you months ago
I know you’re trying to forget
But between the drinks and subtle things
The holes in my apologies, you know
I’m trying hard to take it back
So if by the time the bar closes
And you feel like falling down
I’ll carry you home

Tonight
We are young
So let’s set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun

Tonight
We are young
So let’s set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun

Now I know that I’m not
All that you got
I guess that I, I just thought
Maybe we could find new ways to fall apart
But our friends are back
So let’s raise a cup
‘Cause I found someone to carry me home

Tonight
We are young
So let’s set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun

Tonight
We are young
So let’s set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun

Carry me home tonight (Nananananana)
Just carry me home tonight (Nananananana)
Carry me home tonight (Nananananana)
Just carry me home tonight (Nananananana)

The world is on my side
I have no reason to run
So will someone come and carry me home tonight
The angels never arrived
But I can hear the choir
So will someone come and carry me home

Tonight
We are young
So let’s set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun

Tonight
We are young
So let’s set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun

So if by the time the bar closes
And you feel like falling down
I’ll carry you home tonight

yeah, i don't have much patience either........

loool love the ending when he drops it :)
