The Tautochrone Curve

No matter where a ball is placed on the curve, it will roll to the bottom in the same amount of time.

The curve is called the tautochrone, and it is an inverted cycloid.  A cycloid is the line traced out by a point on a rolling circle.

Christiaan Huygens discovered this remarkable property of the cycloid in 1659.

The battle is heating up! Now Elsevier, Springer and a third publisher are suing the main technical university in Zurich, the ETH, for distributing copies of their journal articles at a lower cost than the publishers themselves. It's obvious why the publishers are doing this. But here's an article by the head of the ETH library, making his side of the case. He says the delivery of electronic copies of documents is allowed by the Swiss Copyright Act. He also makes a broader moral case:

• More or less all scientifically relevant journals rely on the results of publicly funded research.

• The brunt of evaluating scientific findings (i.e. peer reviewing) is borne by the scientific community, with the publishers playing only a supporting role.

• By far the most important customers for all major science publishers are academic libraries, the vast majority of which are themselves supported by public funding.

"In the legal proceedings, the aim must therefore be to strike a balance between the services provided by the ETH-Bibliothek for the benefit of science and research on the one hand and the commercial interests of the publishers on the other."

It'll be interesting to see how this goes!

Interviewer said "I shall either ask you ten easy questions or one really difficult question. Think well before you make up your mind!" The boy thought for a while and said, "my choice is one really difficult question." "Well, good luck to you, you have made your own choice! Now tell me this.
"What comes first, Day or Night?"
The boy was jolted into reality as his admission depends on the correctness of his answer, but he thought for a while and said, "It's the DAY sir!"
"How" the interviewer asked.
"Sorry sir, you promised me that you will not ask me a SECOND difficult question!"
He was selected for IIM!

This is a famous paper written for an Oxford philosophy exam, normally requiring an eight page essay answer and expected to be backed up with source material, quotes and analytical reasoning. This guy wrote the below answer and topped the exam!

OXFORD EXAMINATION BOARD 1987, ESSAY QUESTION

Cyanide experts needed to help with Belgium train disaster
I have been asked to post  a request for help from anyone familiar with cyanide contamination, poisoning, cleanup and/or monitoring.

http://twocircles.net/2013may05/train_carrying_chemicals_derails_belgium_two_dead.html

On May 5, a cargo train carrying cyanide and other raw chemicals derailed in Belgium and caught fire. The towns of Schellebelle and Wetteren are now dealing with potential health issues and other concerns related to chemical contamination. Information is needed to help healthcare providers properly treat residents, and monitor for symptoms related to exposure. Information is also needed to provide to residents so they can act responsibly.

NOTE: There is a community set up for providing information and resources related to this disaster. Many of the members don't know how to use Google translate, so information to residents would need to be in Dutch.

If you have specific knowledge about cyanide and are willing to help, contact me. Thank you.

We think technology should work for you—to be there when you need it and get out of your way when you don’t.

A group of us from Google[x] started Project Glass to build this kind of technology, one that helps you explore and share your world, putting you back in the moment. We’re sharing this information now because we want to start a conversation and learn from your valuable input. So we took a few design photos to show what this technology could look like and created a video to demonstrate what it might enable you to do.

Please follow along as we share some of our ideas and stories. We’d love to hear yours, too. What would you like to see from Project Glass?
