The tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee are calling alimony deduction a “divorce subsidy”. Couples that have been divorced can often achieve better tax results for payments than a married couple.
With that being said, alimony deductions will be going away if congress passes the tax bill by the end of year, taking effect for divorce and separation agreements signed after December 31, 2018.
