Yesterday John Shook spoke about the origins of Lean and how GM, completely disrupted by Toyota, made an extraordinary pivot turning it’s worst manufacturing facility in Fremont into NUMMI. A facility that has pivoted yet again – it is now owned by Tesla and producing the worlds most advanced vehicles. Toyota’s impact on the auto [...]

Previously I wrote about business model disruption as one of the 3 common contexts for mobile initiatives Modus Create engages in. A second is transition from hardware-based (HW) business to software (SW) (which is often accompanied by business model disruption). Two years ago Mark Andreessen described this trend in a now famous Wall Street Journal […]

Mobile + Cloud + APIs: Telcos, Lean and The API Economy
Revenue growth for telcos no longer flows from copper networks, but from applications. The new territory where, in theory, Telcos have two key advantages: 1. Cloud applications require Telco-provided broadband services, and 2. The complexities of user provisioning, end-user support and subscription billing are core competencies of telcos but (yet) not of many software developers. [...]

This restaurant used to be known for delicious Mexican cuisine. Last night my wife and I visited with great expectations, only to get disappointed. The welcoming waiter (no hosts there) was very friendly and seated us promptly, offering a menu that matched our spoken language. Mexican food wasn't offered there so they provided with a Mexican-only menu upon inquiry. We ordered quesadilla, burrito, and onion rings. The food was tasty, but the only thing Mexican about it were the names. Tortilla was just a basic dough rolled out thin. Onion rings were so soaked in oil that I could have more than two before feeling it in my stomach. Eventually the manager asked us about our impressions and I was entirely honest with him. I said that the food was all but Mexican and the onion rings were painfully oily. He boldly challenged my understanding of Mexican cuisine, but I've been lucky enough to have traveled the world quite a bit in my life to know better. Then the manager suggested that I must have expected Mariachi to accompany the experience and left our table laughing. It doesn't end here. I asked the waiter to pack the remainder our food (we could eat no more than half od the gigantic portions, and almost none of the onion rings). 10-ish minutes later he comes back with a broken container, instructing us to take additional care as the lid won't close due to damage. I asked for a bag, he comes back and hands me the bag. He never even offered to pack it for us. On top of it the food in the container looked terrible, just dropped inside including the salad with all the dressing splashed on food. Trust me, it didn't look pretty, much less professional. Finally, as we walked out of the venue I begged my wife to remind me never to go to restaurant Arkada again. Ever!
