My Grandmother would always remind us of what it took for women to win the right to vote. My Grandmother was proud of her education and had always wanted to go to college but it did not work out for her. She was a bit envious of her younger sister who did attend college. She was very proud of the fact my mother attended college and would eventually get her Master’s Degree.
When my siblings and I struggled with life she would tell us stories of her younger years. My grandmother had an eloquent way of putting us in our place. Compared to her life and the life sacrifices my grandparents had to endure we didn’t have a leg to stand on in the complaining department.
In the end it helped me to see how fortunate we were and how we should not take the simple things in life for granted.
My grandmother wasn’t and still isn’t outwardly political but I think if she was fully aware of today’s political environment and the current administration she would have a few things to say about it. She would also pray… a lot.
I think as a country we are forgetting history. Our society is forgetting history and in turn forgetting the challenges others endured to get their families where they are today. #100daysfor100years #grandmothershands

My grandmother was the eldest child of painter and a farmer’s daughter. She was very proud of her parents and all they managed to accomplish in their lives. My grandmother raised me on stories of how her father could wall paper a ceiling by himself and paint the woodwork of a house leaving the painted wood feeling like satin.
My grandmother has lived through vast changes in her 100 years. In my life she met the changes with curiosity and a desire to stay abreast with her changing world.
I have been told my grandmother’s father always said “She was afraid she would miss something.” And my grandmother has admitted as much over the years…. How else do you live to be 100 years old!

This Summer my Grandmother turns 100 years old! In honor of her and her life all proceeds from book sales during a 100-day span; May 24 to August 31 will be donated. My Grandmother was very active with her church and with Zonta Club; for those not familiar with Zonta check out www.zonta.org
This year also marks the five-year anniversary of my first book Grandmother’s Hands, which I dedicated to my Grandmother.
Grandmother's Hands started in the Fall of 2010. I was about 8.5 months pregnant, a dear friend of mine was getting married overseas, and I wanted to give her something very special for her wedding. The Unity page in the book was created. Since then various pages where created for different occasions.
I have put much love, heart and soul into this book. Many tears were shed as deep loving memories where brought to the surface and transcribed into words.
I hope all who read Grandmother's Hands are left with warm nostalgia in their hearts.

the old Lakota was wise. He knew that a man’s heart, away from nature, becomes hard; he knew that lack of respect for growing, living things soon led to lack of respect for humans, too. So he kept his children close to nature’s softening influence.
