Umbrella Movement erupts

Frustrated with the lack of progress, student protesters surrounded one of the key government buildings in Hong Kong tonight: the Chief Executive's Office. The office is one city block from the large Occupy location in Admiralty where protesters have been encamped for 2 months. Tension built until a violent clash erupted between police and protesters.

Here, you can see police pepper spraying the protesters, who attempt to shield themselves with umbrellas. This is where the name Umbrella Movement comes from. On the left, you can see a yellow tank that holds the tear spray which the police also used liberally tonight.

Students are upset that the upcoming Chief Executive elections will only allow Hong Kongers to choose between a small number of candidates who will be hand picked by a pro-Beijing Nominating Committee. The protesters' rally cry has been, "我要真普選", translated, "I want real universal suffrage." This is in contrast to what they perceive as a disingenuous form of suffrage put in place by the Chinese government.

Can anyone identify this flower/plant? The flower size is only about 3 cm or about 1 inch.

Opened in 1910, the art nouveau Casino in Constanța, Romania, has seen its fortunes worsen for a hundred years. It was a hospital in WWII and a restaurant during the communist regime. It has been closed and crumbling since 1990.

Introduction
I'm a 54 year old city guy who positively prefers urban life after a five year hiatus in the hinterlands of Nowhere-ville and an interminable childhood in the heart of Yee Haw Junction.

I have lived in several parts of the United States -- Florida, Virginia, Pennsylvania (twice), Louisiana, Oregon, Washington, and California -- and despite the appearance of homogeneity one sees on the surface, due primarily to our corporate overlords, the country still tends to vary quite a bit. For this, I am grateful.

I also lived in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates, for a year and a half. It was not quite terra incognita.

Politically, I'm middle of the road, and don't declare for either of the major parties. You know them: the Ass party and the other, bigger Ass party.

Having not acquired a strong sense of self-motivation or discipline, as a youth, I fight a never-ending battle against apathy, entropy, narcissism (of a particularly apathetic kind), and have a preoccupation with nihilism and existentialism. In practice, this simply results in a dusty house and unfolded laundry. However, a modicum of talent, combined with frequent episodes of luck, have brought me good fortune, overall.

And now for the obligatory and standard profile paragraph. I like long road trips, the beach at night, expensive hotels, and riding subways and trains. I love run-on sentences, I am addicted to Popeye's red beans and oreo cookies, and I have comma disease. I have a very eclectic background: from sailor, to zookeeper, to computer geek.
