Thank you Sara Wachter-Boettcher for pushing this overwhelmingly straight white male audience think about topics like sexual assault and having true empathy and compassion in your #Drupal keynote.

Please do me a favor and watch the video when it gets posted.

The tech community has major problems with empathy and inclusivity. It's too easy to just say "on the Internet it doesn't matter what gender/color/<insert label here> you are" ... but it does. It's absolutely relevant and deliberately ignoring it is not only disingenuous and lazy, it is often actively hurtful.

Sara's talk focuses on the users we write this technology for - after all, they're the ones who make sure we all have jobs - but it's just as important to consider when interacting with our peers in the industry.
Global communities like the Drupal world enjoy a huge diversity of contributors, but more people bringing in their unique emotional experiences can often mean more opportunities for misunderstandings. That's why we're pleased to announce our third keynote for DrupalCon: renowned content ...

It's a bit surreal working on a project with developer in enough timezones to be quite literally working 24 hours a day:

Cards Against Humanity strikes again:

Irony and attitude juxtaposed with compassion. I love it. I can't wait to see what they do next year.

We used the money from one day of our holiday promotion to give our workers something very uncommon in China: a paid vacation.

So true: https://twitter.com/fordm/status/673988397304815616

The repetition of racist or bigoted speech has a desensitizing effect that causes people to accept it as legitimate and acceptable when, in fact, it is neither. Recently, people I care for and respect have begun repeating deeply offensive statements made by public figures that I never would have expected to hear from them. I find this both profoundly sad and frightening.

Please, everyone, step back and try to look at what's being said objectively before repeating it. Before making a sweeping statement about "Muslims" or "Arabs", try the same sentence substituting "Christians" or "Anglo-Saxons" as a test. Does it sound like a ridiculous or unfair generalization? Then perhaps the same is true for the original.

Not all men are rapists. Not everyone with brown skin is an illegal immigrant. Not every Christian is an intolerant zealot. Not every person who attends a Mosque is a terrorist.
The immediate danger isn't Trump's actual policy, but the bigotry and violence that it both legitimizes and encourages. 2:12 PM - 7 Dec 2015. 649 Retweets521 Likes. Reply to @fordm. Replies. Alex Fitzpatrick. 48m48 minutes ago. Alex Fitzpatrick @AlexJamesFitz. @fordm yes. Ferguson Mitchell ...

I normally hate this sort of video, but this one distills down a major factor in our industry's diversity problem to a very succinct 3 minutes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_52T8ufdZM

Update those Drupal modules, folks! Also remove (not just disable) any development modules on any system exposed to the world.

I'd be surprised if that office has WiFi.  If it's the HQ it probably doesn't (but it has a decent pit toilet).  If it's the Field Office just south of the lake, it is newer and might have the Internets.

Spotlessly-clean rooms. They appear to be newly-remodeled (mine still smelled faintly of paint). A bit Spartan - no coffee maker or extra blankets in the room - but nicely decorated and comfortable. Better wi-fi than I've seen in a hotel in a long time. Good bandwidth and ping times. The casino is small and smells of smoke, but I don't really care as I'm not here to gamble. The hotel is steps from the Fremont Street Experience, which is a mixed blessing. The show is fun, but the lower floor rooms can hear it all too well. The restaurant downstairs is decent and reasonably priced, although their "house made salsa" tasted more like marinara than salsa. If stay here again. Nice rooms, great price.

Our favorite hotel in Victoria. We've been staying here for years. Clean and affordable, the hotel is perfect for exploring downtown and Beacon Hill Park. The decor is charming and the staff is friendly. The restaurant and pub downstairs are both friendly and often crowded with locals.

The restaurant was packed and it smelled good - usually a good sign for a restaurant -but the food was disappointingly bland. The "scallops in spicy sauce" were anything but spicy. We asked for some hot oil to spice it up, but even the hot oil was bland. It wasn't bad, just boring and flavorless. The fish tanks along the wall had dead fish in them. Although, to be fair, the manager noticed it as quickly as we did and the dead fish was gone in seconds. Maybe we just ordered the wrong thing, as no place that bland could possibly have so many customers.

Reasonably-priced with a decent restaurant/lounge and easy access to downtown via Skytrain. It's our go-to hotel whenever we're in Vancouver.
