Interesting tidbit in this paper out of Yahoo Research, that a key and dominant predictor of how much people like a picture of a face is how sharp and clear the eyes are in the photo.

This might suggest an easy feature for phones when people take selfies, that the phone should try hard to make the eyes in focus and maybe even delay the shot (or twiddle how the data is combined from multiple shots when using HDR) try to improve the sharpness of the eyes in the photo.

A little more as a teaser for the paper: "crucial for aesthetic prediction are landmark sharpness (Right Eye and Left Eye), the Exposure Quality, and the high discriminative ability of the Fuzzy Properties Uniqueness."
