I hear you, Mark. The best explanation that I've heard was at a conference, where research was presented that showed more than 90% of smartphone users watch video in the vertical orientation -- and get annoyed if they have to rotate it to a horizontal orientation in order to clearly see what's going on. So, my best recommendation is to do some experiments yourself and see if you get higher completion rates or more engagements -- and then make the kind of videos that your audience prefers.
