With the first snow of the season in the forecast for parts of Virginia, you may be wondering how to keep your home warm without breaking the bank. We have some tips!

1) Install a programmable thermostat and turn your heat down to 66-68 degrees during the day. If you can't do this, you can set a reminder alarm in your phone to manually change the temp before you leave the house and go to bed each day.
2) Keep your windows covered at night & during extreme cold to prevent drafts; leave South facing window coverings open during the day to take advantage of passive Solar heating.
3) Leave your oven and dishwasher open after use to capture the heat they produce. You can buy an inexpensive kit online to vent your electric clothes dryer indoors to capture that heat as well. You're already paying to produce it, why not use it?
4) Check to be sure that your registers are not blocked and that your filters are not dirty. Restricted airflow severely curtails system efficiency & can even cause your unit to shut down.
5) Make sure that you have a CO2 detector with a working battery in your home if you heat with gas, wood, or oil. Carbon monoxide kills dozens each year in the US and it is entirely preventable!!
6) If you need to call for service turn your unit OFF while you wait to allow it to thaw and prevent further damage.

With all the holiday hustle & bustle, don't forget to change your air filters and keep your registers clear - your wallet will thank you!
