Some customers have been receiving emails claiming that a Bill Pay transaction has failed and was rejected by the Electronic Payments Association.
The email fails to reference the customer's financial institution by name, instead referring to it as 'your company's online banking'.
The email then asks customers to click a link to receive more information about the problem.
The Greater has confirmed with BPAY that these emails are in no way legitimate. For customers who have received these emails, we recommend the following course of action:
- The email is fraudulent and could possibly contain malware or a virus in the link. These types of emails are becoming more prevalent and it is essential to keep your virus protection on your computer up to date.
- As with any email where you cannot verify the sender of the email, we recommend that you delete the email.
- If you have clicked on the link you may need to have your computer professionally ‘cleaned’ to ensure malware or a virus was not downloaded.
- If you have opened a link and you are registered for Internet Banking we would also temporarily lock your Internet Banking access to protect your online banking. Please call our Service Centre on 1300 651 400 for assistance.
