What happens after truck driving school?

This is a question that comes up quite a bit. Watch the video in this post as PAM Transport driver, Scott, answers this question and talks about his experience with his Driver Mentor during OTR (over-the-road) training.

Go here: http://goo.gl/HdjKkf

Starting a new career as a truck driver is an exciting time.  Going to truck driving school, learning the skills to drive a big rig, making new friends and earning a steady paycheck getting paid to travel.  All of these things represent a new beginning and new chapter in life.  But one question that always comes up is - what happens after CDL training at trucking school BEFORE I go out on the road on my own?  The answer is OTR (over-the-road) training, but what does that mean and what does it involve for a company like PAM Transport?

USA Truck gave John a solid foundation to start his career. How about some of these great experiences he's been able to enjoy in just a few years...

I graduated 2/8/13 and did my year with USA Truck. I then got involved with promotional driving where I spent 6 months driving Lady Gaga's charity RV following her around the country displaying it at the front doors of all of her concerts.

Then I drove the North Face Airstream for 3 months promoting their new jackets at North Face stores all over the U.S. Now, I finally get to jump back into a Rig (2015 Peterbilt Anniversary Pride and Class) that is in the process of being stretched into a mobile showroom to do a 6 month tour promoting Husky Tools for The Home Depot.

Get the full story on John's career here:

I was very tentative about my choice in going to this school but they ( the instructors ) put me at ease from day one. They encouraged and guided me throughout the entirety of my time there . My success actually mattered to then not because I was just a number but because I was a person trying to be a professional driver as a career. Just as a side note of proof there was instructors who actually volunteered to come in on Saturday mornings to help me and others achieve our goals truly a class act .I was a phone salesman more I'm on my way to being a truck driver thanks to all of these hard working individuals who cared about me they really went above and beyond ....

I recently graduated from FTA in Asheboro, on the 29th of September. I found the entire staff there to be informative, respectful, courteous, knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Driver Solutions was also straight forward about everything. I would definitely recommend them and FTA to anyone who was contemplating a professional truck driving career.

Good group of instructors. You're given the tools for success and there's no secret that it'll be up to you to achieve it. You'll only get as far as you're willing to work to get. There's a lot of information to cover in just a 3 week program, you're bound to get hung up on something but there's always an instructor that will take the time necessary to help you. I had a very positive experience with this program and graduated with a red hat in just 3 weeks.

90% of my time on the yard was standing there watching other people drive. Not saying watching doesn't help in anyway but you can only learn so much watching and I am paying a lot of money for a very limited time actually doing/learning how to be a professional driver. After passing the classroom/range top/first of the class I get rushed to take the BMV test that day even though I told her I needed 1 more day of practice on the range and of course i failed (barely failed) on that note it could of saved you guys a little bit of money if you listen to your students and it wasn't like I was behind and I needed to hurry up and catch up. I was the first student without prior experience to graduate and the only one to do it in 3 weeks exactly in my class. I went to the C1 in Fort Wayne, IN.. On a positive note, the instructors I did work with were amazing and it felt like everyone working there really wanted better conditions and equipment because they cared about your success. I would say thank you to Driver solutions and C1 but It seemed like you guys are just to interested in making money and less about molding professional drivers.
