I've just being doing a bit more hacking on the Map of CPAN. Now in the cases where a module's metadata lacks an abstract (distressingly common) one will be generated automatically from the POD - this should at least give a hint about what the module does.

I thought that the built-in POD browsing was a killer feature and I use it all the time, but apparently nobody else does :-( I can tell from the log files that people use the site to poke around and explore different modules and their dependencies - exactly what it's intended for. But nobody ever clicks the "Module documentation" links and I'm mystified as to why not. I think I need to make it clearer which links go off-site and which ones (like the documentation links) stay in the map.

Now that you mention it, you're right I don't belong to a gym either. So yeah he's clearly wrong.

The http://mapofcpan.org/ site has just been updated to include all the contributions from 2012 Catalyst Open Source Academy students Jiaheng Wang and Victor Wang - thanks guys!

The major improvement is that when you're exploring modules on the map, the POD documentation will now be displayed in a dialog rather than sending the user to the https://metacpan.org/ site and requiring them to use 'back' to return to the map. Of course all the data and POD is still being sourced from the awesome metacpan site.

Other improvements from Victor and Jiaheng include: [x] buttons to clear the input boxes used to search the map; a new 'leaderboard' listing maintainers who have updated their profiles recently.

This release also includes some caching improvements and a number of bug fixes.
