Matt, civil dialogue, where we respect the opinions of others and avoid such logical fallacies as ad homonym , leads to a discussion where we can both express strong opinions, and possibly learn something we didn’t know before. None of us has all the answers. I learn new things every day.
IMO, it’s not homosexual marriage that opens the door to polygamy and other offshoots, it is the changing of a societal standard, existing for thousands of years that creates an “open door” to do whatever you want. Once you open that door and say that marriage is something else, you create a situation where others will say, well if you want to define it as same sex/other sex marriages, then I want to have two wives or husbands, as the case may be. Who will say that is not OK? If someone does say, well you can’t have two wives, they will say, you changed it to same sex marriage/others sex. What gave you the authority to make the change? Well, then I want it to include polygamy or some other form. Don’t tell me that won’t happen.
My point about nasty divorce was that is not limited to heterosexuals. You can chose to do what you wish, as long as you are responsible for the consequences either good or bad. IMO, liberty is the highest value.
I’m sure a lot of good came out of the sixties. My point was that when the hippies decided to change what healthy relationships were, they produced some things that were detrimental to society. Among them were communicable diseases, disrespect of personal commitments. If it’s free love, then I should be able to pursue your mate.
As to your point about benefits to significant others, it’s not fair that you heterosexuals and you same sex couples can get benefits, when we who have two wives can’t, just because a few people don’t think I should have two wives. And, it’s not fair that you heterosexuals and you same sex couples and you men with two wives can get benefits when me who is married to my sister, can’t get the same thing because people do not like my choice of partners. Pandor’s box. Don’t say that won’t happen. Human nature is such that they will push a standard until something stops them.
