Biking, jogging, & playing sports are examples of fun ways to stay active and healthy. But sometimes being active leads to falls, scrapes and cuts. If you suffer a small cut or abrasion, here are some quick steps to treat the wound: 1) Clean the wound 2) Stop the bleeding 3) Cover the wound with a sterile bandage 4) Watch for signs of infection such as redness, temperature over 100 degrees, & pus  5) For any abnormal symptoms please call a Doctor right away.

Speaking of water, we can’t forget to take precautions against West Nile Virus. The most effective way to avoid West Nile virus disease is to prevent mosquito bites. Wear long sleeves & pants, use insect repellants, be extra careful in the evening and night time.

Don’t swallow pool water -> For many families summertime means spending plenty of time in the swimming pool. But be sure your activities are safe and healthy. This includes keeping your mouth closed. Do not swallow pool water. Chlorine kills most but not all germs. So swallowing water can lead to gastrointestinal, skin, ear, respiratory, eye, neurologic, and wound infections. So when swimming, Keep Your Mouth Closed.

Getting bitten by a snake can be very frightening. But some common sense tips can help deal with the situation as effectively as possible. 1) Call 911. Although most snake are not venomous, a misdiagnosed snake could be fatal. 2) Try to take a picture or identify the snake. 3) Lie down with the wound below the victim's heart. 4) Be still, so the poison does not spread.

School is out and summer is here. While enjoying the summer, be sure to stay safe when it comes to protecting your skin from the sun's harmful rays. Common sense advice? Stay out of the sun when possible, always use sun protection with a strong SPF, and stay hydrated.
