Karate is great for a healthy and balanced physical development of children. But even more important benefit of karate for kids is the rapid development of their mental characteristics: they feel comfortable with other people, they do not get overwhelmed by emotions, they are able to accept disappointments, they learn to make their own decisions, they feel good about themselves, they learn to adjust to their environment. That is the most significant difference between the traditional martial arts, such as authentic Japanese karate, and popular sports, such as football, basketball, soccer, etc. Karate is for body, mind, and spirit, regular sports are for breaking sweat only.

With Bob, the oldest member of my dojo. Bob is 67 but he is still practicing karate with the enthusiasm of a teenager. And he has much more strength and power than the majority of young people. Being old is a state of mind.

Just finished self-defense seminar with a tremendous group of young women from Marist High School. Understanding what the will for survival can do for you and understanding the psychology of attackers, are much more important aspect of my self-defense seminars than any self-defense technique. Being a victim is a state of mind.

Our students love practicing their kicks and punches on Bob Jr. and Bob Sr. BOBs are very realistic targets and they are a more accurate simulation of striking a real person than any other free standing heavy bag.

Those who do not have good understanding of martial arts will say that the most karate stances are impractical, but they do not know, or understand, that karate was based on the need to confront multiple opponents at the same time. Real, authentic karate is not "one-on-one" martial art. Each karate stance has a specific purpose and function, but you need to study karate as an art of self-defense, not as a sports discipline, in order to understand it.
