Just announced at #io12: Offline editing in Google documents

With offline editing, you can create and edit Google documents and leave comments. Any changes you make will be automatically synced when you get back online. Note that you’ll need the latest versions of Chrome or Chrome OS to edit documents offline, and we’re working hard to make offline editing for spreadsheets and presentations available in the future.

Yay good news can't wait to try it right after my holiday
Teachers and students would be even more happy if Google Docs could do the most basic tasks for education like citing in connection with a reference manager and a self updating reference list. It would be as easy as offering a suitable API. Then services like Zotero would do the work for you: No good teacher will use a Word processor which has no acceptable citing support, because this is the basis for scholar work.
Don't mix up message boards with scholar work. For scholar work citing is the basis, because a statement without a reference has a value of zero.
