I'm in the UK, bought one yesterday. For me (in a thick walled old English cottage), WiFi signal strength and coverage is a perennial problem. The original Chromecast HDMI device whilst excellent has been problematic. Here in some parts of rural UK we also don't get great internet speeds - I get about 3Mb download. My use scenario is as follows:
- I have paired up the Nexus Player with a OTG USB Ethernet adapter (to resolve the WiFi / Chromecast device issue). Why Google / Asus omit a Ethernet port is just baffling - I suspect it is because the designers care more about size / form factor and that most users will have glorious WiFi coverage.
- I have installed Kodi (XBMC) and the user experience on this is great (where again WiFi would never cut the mustard streaming 1080p MKV files). The good news on audio is that Kodi supports audio pass-through so I get 5.1 DTS and Dolby Digital audio, even though the lack of surround sound for the native apps (e.g. Netflix and Google Movies) is a current limitation I believe (hopefully will be fixed).
- I am a subscriber to Google Play Music, and Netflix hence the Nexus Player is great for these.
What is missing for us in the UK however are native Android TV/Nexus Player apps from the likes of the BBC (iplayer), ITV, Channel 4 and Sky / Now TV. Luckily because the Nexus Player appears on Mobile / tablet and Chrome Browsers as a "Chromecast" streaming device, all of the above UK TV services can be run from/on the Nexus Player via the Cast Button on our Android (or Apple if so inclined) products. - e.g. Just install the iPlayer App on your Mobile Phone / tablet and cast it to the Nexus Player.
Will the UK adopt this ....erm not sure, but for me its fantastic (so far).Apr 3, 2015

IMO it would be a great strategy for Google to sponsor the development/licencing of a retro-gaming pack with old arcade faves like Pacman, Donkey Kong and Galaga, and include that as a free download with the Nexus Player (maybe if purchased with the game controller).
Oh, and sort out local TV catch up apps. They're available for Android so it shouldn't be that hard.Aug 20, 2015
