Will You Be Ready For The Next Big Meteor Shower?
I wanted to give a heads up on something new (and very cool) that's very possibly coming our way. And while it's not a sure thing, this next meteor shower is predicted to be very active and good for viewing in North America on Memorial Day weekend in 2014. I've been watching articles on this for quite a while now and with the Geminids now behind us, this is very likely our next big show and it's now only 5 months away. And since it's not a regular event like the August Perseids and the December Geminids, this one would be easy for most people to miss - so I wanted to give a heads up.
The deal is that Earth is going to pass in the path of a comet and it's debris is expected to lead to a meteor shower. The intensity of this meteor shower has been a subject of a little debate over the past year or so with some saying it'll reach the intensity of a meteor storm with 400-1,000 meteors per hour while other more conservative estimates say it'll be a strong shower with 100-400 meteors per hour. Either way, it's been recognized for some time as an event to watch with peak activity on the morning of May 24, 2014.
When I looked at the calendar for this date, I was pleased to see a thin moon. What this means is that making plans for a possible great experience with the meteors would be a good bet because it'd be great timing for general starry night photography as well. So with that in-mind, you'll probably find it no coincidence that I've planned one of the biggest night photography training adventures of the year to coincide with this predicted celestial event - from my favorite locations in Arches & Canyonlands National Parks.
