Continuing with the employment theme, how should firms treat #employees? Is it right for them to let silence=rejection? I say no. Firms need to treat would be staff the way they'd want to be treated. It is only an indication of how it would be to work for them.

Advice for the fall #intern: treat your manager as you would want to be treated in the same situation. In other words, think deeply about what they want before they have to tell you.

Using the #Goldenrule  in business is always the right approach whether you made a mistake or are creating a solution for a customer.

If you are working with #marketingautomation  you've probably pressed the wrong button now and then, or had faulty logic send out the wrong thing. Never fear! If you always remember the #goldenrule  you can still recover and come out unscathed.

Speaking of good design...what if we applied the #GoldenRule  to airport seating? What if we said "is this how I would want to be treated when I wait for a plane?" instead of "How can I cram the most seats in here in the budget I have?"

New Post!
Graduate student Esther Kim reminded me of the many rules people use when trying to stay comfortable on public transit. This is about the bus and could be used elsewhere too. Stay tuned for more travel rules!
But remember it all comes down to the #GoldenRule

ecommerce sites spend enormous sums to design systems to move us to buy more quickly and more often. The easy way to make buying easier is to think like your buyer! Ask if your site's buying process treats your customers the way they want to be treated--the Golden Rule Way.

If you run any type of site always remember to ask the Golden Rule Questions to get to the optimal design faster than your competition. In other words, you get to help people faster and better than others. Pretty cool!

New Post! Imagine if employers used the #GoldenRule when hiring staff. They might actually become human and do the right thing.

People need to view their job as a place to help others solve their problems at the very least because that’s how they would want to be treated in the same situation.

You can hire people who believe in the Golden Rule and then train them to solve that set of problems. You can try to train people to see how the Golden Rule benefits everyone, especially themselves. To be remarkable, however, you can only hire for the Golden Rule attitude. It’s not just a job. It’s who you are. Who you will be.

This is the broken windows hypothesis. Not enforcing or setting good maintenance examples definitely leads to staff apathy and eventually decay in customer relationships. You attract what you are. So if you want a clean, attractive business, treat it well by treating your staff the way you want to be treated.

"Much has been written about customer moments of truth or boss-employee interactions that set the tone, but relatively little has been said about employees' physical environment, which is more permanent, harder to alter, and in people's faces constantly. Failing to keep it in tip-top shape is a powerful visual signal to customers, but also to employees." Rosabeth Moss Kanter in

New Post!
Should public transit agencies be allowed to avoid the consequences of poor service and maintenance? Why have they traditionally acted outside the #GoldenRule  when they are, in theory, beholden to the people they serve?

Great point from @hmanning about the different components of customer experience. Not practicing the #GoldenRule with your staff affects the people who pay the bills--your customers. So if you are at least using the #GoldenRule  with your customers, then it must follow to use it with your team too.
And you should consider you, your staff, your players, your professionals, and your customers all part of the team.
I'm not the biggest NFL fan in the world, but now that I live in Boston, I follow the Patriots. I think it's actually a requirement of citizenship. And I do have a passing interest in some other teams...

I updated my earlier post on +JDavidHill.com regarding Marketing Automation to discuss more about how the Golden Rule can help guide the automation process. Remember, it's about your audience, your customers, your prospects--not you. So ask the Golden Rule Questions!
