By changing our relationship with power and redefining it from the oppressive power-over to the expansive power-TO, we can embrace it to lead authentically as women.

John Oliver thinks it’s ridiculous that the United States doesn’t guarantee paid maternity leave, and he’s using his platform to let the world know it.

Continuing the series on storytelling 101 by Megan Finnerty. Good stuff.
People tell stories about you all the time. When they recommend you for jobs, for blind dates, for community/school/religious group leadership opportunities. In them, you’re almost always totally indistinguishable from Beyoncé. Kidding. I have no idea what people are saying about you. Do you? They’re likely telling the stories you tell about yourself. If you want more money, more resources, more dates or more opportunities to serve—you need stori...

It’s official: Hillary Clinton is running for President of the United States. She announced her candidacy on Sunday via a video posted to her website. Her decision to enter the 2016 presidential race wasn’t exactly a shocker—despite years of “maybe I will, maybe I won’t” statements, everyone on the planet pretty much knew this was coming—but Twitter was still buzzing for hours after the video went live. Now that her campaign has launched, a quick...

More great storytelling tips from Megan Finnerty.
(Note: This is the second instalment in a series on telling stories about yourself. The first is about key work narratives.) Some call it volunteerism. Some say it’s advocacy. Some label it leadership. It can happen at school, in your neighborhood, at your temple, or at your local rec center. Whatever you call it, building your career thorough strategic service is smart. (It also makes you happy.) And you want to make sure the right opportunities...

Are you a mentor? Do you have one? Or three?
You hear it all the time: women don’t help other women; women undermine one another at work rather than lift each other up. But pretty much every success I’ve had in my career has come from the support of other women. I’ve been lucky to have multiple mentors who have changed my life. Here are three lessons I learned from three mentors that shed light on how to find a mentor, and keep her. 1) Good mentees start by giving. (The get will come.) One ...

The NFL announced on Thursday that Sarah Thomas will become the first full-time female referee in league history. The 41-year-old Thomas officiated some NFL team minicamps last year, and was also the first woman to officiate a college bowl game in 2009. She will be working as a line judge when the NFL kicks off its 2015 season in September. This is an encouraging sign of progress from the NFL, which faced heavy criticism for its handling of runni...

No doubt, leadership is about power. But at its best, it’s about positive power—the power to take decisive action and make things happen (#PowerTO)—not oppressive power (power over). We all need the power to do anything, and in her run for the presidency, Clinton is going to need a ton of it. At Take The Lead we teach nine power tools (the list is below) that any woman needs to meet the challenges of leadership in her life and career. Pioneered a...

The thing about telling your story is… you’ve got to tell it. As in: out loud. In public. In front of at least two to 47 other people. This is how you get your message across to your boss, your future investor, or your new friend/hot person you want to watch The Mindy Project with and take out on hikes. Or whatever it is you do with your new friends/hot people. Today, we’re going to make a plan for pushing through the feelings of awkwardness, ner...

Co-Founder and President, Take The Lead; Author of No Excuses: 9 Ways Women Can Change How We Think About Power
Introduction
Gloria Feldt is co-founder and president of Take The Lead, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to prepare, develop, inspire, and propel women to take their fair and equal share of leadership positions across all sectors by 2025.  A renowned activist and author, whose passion for social justice has propelled her life’s work, her latest book, No Excuses: 9 Ways Women Can Change How We Think About Power, reveals why women are stuck at 18% of top leadership roles. Through inspirational stories and practical tools, in keynotes, workshops, writings, and courses, Gloria shows how women can redefine power, lead themselves with intention, and reach parity from the boardroom to the bedroom for good—their own and society’s.

Gloria Feldt’s previous books include the New York Times bestseller Send Yourself Roses, co-authored with actress Kathleen Turner, Behind Every Choice Is a Story, and The War on Choice. People Magazine calls Feldt “the voice of experience.” A teen mother from rural Texas, Feldt served as president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the nation’s largest reproductive health and advocacy organization, from 1996-2005. She is a frequent media commentator on women’s leadership and related issues. Feldt teaches “Women, Power, and Leadership” at Arizona State University and serves on the board of the Women’s Media Center.
