Hendaye. The water here is warm and just right for introducing young children to surfing; there are surf schools if you’d prefer they were taught by professionals. Find out more here; http://ow.ly/qu4B30hlVwg

La Rhune. We doubt you’ll have the place to yourself, but it’s popular for a reason, and the reason is clear once you see the view – and two countries – from the top. find out more here. http://ow.ly/xG3s30hlVfW

It’s as Basque as you like, in fact it’s pretty much the area’s economic and political capital, but because it’s a short distance inland it’s not the same tourist-magnet as Biarritz. Find out more http://ow.ly/BaNJ30hlUMW

St Jean de Luz
The French and Spanish are more clued up about this gem than visitors from further away, so don’t tell anyone, but it’s a place you shouldn’t miss. Geography’s been kind to its beach (sheltered and safe) and history drips from its winding old streets with their timber-fronted boutiques and fantastic places to eat, drink and absorb what the Pays Basque is all about, including Maison Adam, there since 1660 and the best chocolate shop (they make macaroons too) we’ve ever seen. Better than all this, though, it’s only a ten-minute drive away from Col d’Ibardin campsite.

San Sebastian. We said Spain wasn’t far. San Sebastian’s not just a short hop across the border, it’s our favourite city anywhere. Find out more here http://ow.ly/zzdQ30hlUnx

Slightly biased when it comes to Guethary, with my favourite surf spot just 100 metres off the beach front this chic little village is a must visit spot for families. check out the video http://ow.ly/6hUI30hlTUF
