My latest column on +Search Engine Land -> Swapped Out: Losing A Google Featured Snippet [Case Study] #seo

In a 2 week period after losing the featured snippet, my client lost 39K+ visits to the page. So I dug in to learn why that happened. The competitor that stole the spotlight came out of nowhere... so I analyzed page structure, content quality, inbound links, social metrics, and more.

You should check it out. It just might help you save your own featured snippets. :)
When a client loses its featured snippet, columnist Glenn Gabe does some competitive analysis to try to determine why. His findings may shed light on what it takes to get a featured snippet in Google search results.

Love this article. I've been trying to knock out a competitor from one of those spots.  We are ranked ahead of them in natural, but they are getting the snippet.  I think I'm pretty close now and hope to see the change soon. #patientlywaiting

BTW, I've seen listing as low as #7 get the direct answer, but often they are in the top 5.  From my analysis, the top 5 natural results are in the sweet spot that could generate that answer and should be looking to get that result.  Usually when I see a direct answer below the top 5 it's because the local pack or other Google feature is pushing down the direct answer out of the top 5, but not often.

Big news -> Facebook tests a video matching tool with select partners that finds clips uploaded without owner's permission via +Peter Kafka

That's Facebook's first attempt to replicate YouTube's ContentID system. It's much-needed since Freebooting is a HUGE problem on FB.
Facebook says it's starting to work on a version of YouTube's Content ID system. It has a long way to go.

From Google's +John Mueller -> If indexed pages are blocked by robots.txt (via a disallow directive), Google will drop info from previous crawls & won't use that for indexing and ranking. (at 32:28 in the video)

And yes, that means Google will sometimes drop those urls from the index. It's not guaranteed, but can happen. #seo

Uh, Search is Baked Into Android... -> Yahoo Says Apps Dominate Mobile Usage, While Search & Browsers are Dead #seo #ppc

I guess Yahoo believes nobody needs to search for information anymore. Sure, we are all-knowing beings now & just use apps we have. Duh. :)
yahoodevelopers: By Simon Khalaf, SVP Publishing Products Last year, on the eve of the sixth anniversary of the mobile revolution, Flurry issued our annual report on the mobile industry. In that report, we analyzed time spent on a mobile device by the average American consumer. We ran the same analysis in Q2 of this year and found interesting trends we are sharing in this report. It's a simple, yet incredibly important file. Make sure you understand the directives & how to use them -> Google Talks About Robots.txt For An Entire Hour via +Barry Schwartz #seo
You'd think the robots.txt directive it pretty cut and dry. It hasn't changed much in the past several years, and it is one of the oldest directives in SEO history. But Google's John Mueller devoted

I've used K&H twice in the past year and I highly recommend their services. They were professional, knowledgeable, and extremely efficient. I dealt with both Rocco and John, who were a pleasure to work with. Their quality of work was extremely high, and you could tell they were passionate about what they do for a living. And I dig working with people that fit into that category. In a nutshell, I hated that my cars needed to be fixed, but I thoroughly enjoyed working with Rocco, John, and everyone else at K&H. I hope I don't need the help of a collision center in the future, but if I do, it'll be K&H. :)
