I am very interested in the Project Sansar development as I feel it is going to become what was christened by Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash as the "metaverse" and will inevitably become the most valuable internet property in history as it will totally redefine the entire paradigm and bring the web into the 21st century. Two-Dimensional spaces are obsolete and have been for quite some time. I am amazed it has taken this long for hardware and software manufacturers to begin developing robust, affordable VR systems. I also have a strong feeling that Linden Labs is going to become for the next iteration of the web what giants such as, Google, Facebook, and Amazon have been to this iteration of it and I want in early.
I predicted several years ago that "virtual real estate" is going to be one of the largest booms in the web's history - even greater than the domain name craze when ICANN first began allowing bulk purchases of domain names by speculators.
I see billions of dollars being made in the sale of virtual real estate to be used much in the same way that real world locations such as, Piccadilly Circus and Times Square are currently being used by advertisers. Any place where large numbers of avatars are congregating will become incredibly valuable to advertisers, the creator of the space, and ultimately Linden Labs. 3D artists and programmers are going to become even more valuable tomorrow than they are today. I see hundreds of "virtual real(ity) estate" magnates coming to be over the next decade. People that have leveraged their talent for design and programming and have created virtual worlds and experiences that can give the average person something that the real world never could. The experiences are only going to become more realistic as the technology becomes better and better until the virtual world is indistinguishable from the real world. First via haptics and eventually via "fuzzy electron" systems directly integrated into the human anatomy - Linden Labs can be at the forefront of this if they properly leverage their experience with virtual world development.
Linden Labs is going to need to ensure that Project Sansar is the most-advanced, easiest to use, best representation of digital anarcho-capitalism it can possibly be if it wants to capture the imagination (and pocket books) of the web's MVP's (Most Valuable Personas). The marketing department is going to have to invite iconoclastic internet celebrities to early trials of Project Sansar (and provide them with high-level VR technology, possibly including haptic devices) so that via their clout, they will influence the soon-to-be millions of VR equipped home-users to adopt the new technology. VR is obviously the next big thing in tech and I see such a huge amount of potential with this that I cannot sleep at night because my head is spinning with dozens of ideas of how this technological can totally change how mankind experiences "life". Everything from how we learn to how we fuck is poised to completely change in the next 20 years.
Second Life was a proving grounds of sort and it is now time to show the real world how much better things can be when the era of Deus Homo begins. When man is given the ability to create without being constrained by the laws of physics and economy - imagine what will become possible!
I can only hope that the system has been designed from the ground-up to constantly be upgraded and re-designed so that it will become as essential to the internet as the world wide web standard has become.
I would like to receive an invite to beta the new system as soon as possible.
