Having been at this Internet thing for so long, it's easy to write off another bad product and ignore it, but Darren makes a good point... sharing a heads up for those who may not realize that "if it seems too good to be true, it probably is".

Over the last few weeks I've bitten my tongue on this but I'm increasingly being asked by good people about a 'Monster' SEO program that promises to rocket you to the top of Google's rankings with just 15 minutes work.

The program is all about generating massive amounts of backlinks to your site - the owners of the program own heaps of sites and are said to be buying more each day. They'll just add your links into their system and pow - you've got backlinks.

For the privilege of the links you pay $47... and then just $147 per month (that's before any up-sells).

The program is being talked up (hype, big promises, lots of blog posts, numerous emails etc) around many blogs (including a few biggish names) - and it's no wonder.... those doing the hyping are affiliates with some big earning potential:

Each sale can generate up to $255 plus a minimum of $59.97 in monthly recurring commissions for the lifetime of the customer. That's close to $1000 in commissions per customer over a year. The program is also giving away $36k in prizes to top affiliates during launch. Some of the blogs doing the 'promoting' are going to be pulling six or seven figures commissions - it's no wonder they're promoting.

None of the blog posts or emails I've read about the program say anything but positive things - there are no warnings of risks - there's no mentioning that these tactics are considered black hat - no pointing out that while they may generate increases in your rankings that they could put you on Google and other search engines radars as trying to manipulate their rankings.

I suspect that programs like these will help many of those who use them to rank their sites higher - in the short term - and that's what these programs creators are counting on.

They get their site promoted by sharing the profits with affiliates (most of whom don't actually participate in their program or take any care in testing it or reporting the risks).

Then they'll take your cash knowing that within months Google will be onto the tactic and change their algorithm to make the tactics less effective. The very fact that this is being promoted as much as it is is guaranteed to have it on Google's radar - if the sudden massive and unnatural surge in linking to your site doesn't signal it.

Your cash is gone - the program creator moves onto another way to take your cash and you are left with the implications of having participated in a black hat system.

Don't risk it friends. Short term gain with long term implications (not to mention your bank account missing cash that could be put into other endeavours).

PS: and if you're tempted to promote it as an affiliate - just think about the implications friends. Send your readers to a dubious scheme that takes their cash and sees something that they're pouring their time and energy into.... what impact does that have on your brand?

Those behind this system are one thing - but what really disturbs me is those promoting it irresponsibly with 'reviews' that are nothing but promotions and grabs for their readers cash.

Don't sell out on your readers.

PS2: a quick update. I don't have anything against a little SEO. Understanding how the search engines rank sites and structuring your site to benefit from that isn't a problem. It's when you get into gaming the Search Engines that you start running risks.

Understand the basics of SEO and implement them - but then get on with creating the type of sites that Google want to rank high.

Got $147 a month to spare to use more effectively? There are 101 better uses of your time and money. Invest into creating quality, useful content. Invest into learning around creating compelling content. Invest into going to a conference to meet people in person to build relationships with other bloggers. Invest into a blog design that will lead people to deeper engagement. Invest into creating a product for your site that serves your readers.

Invest your time into building a site that matters to your readers over the long haul - then you'll build something that lasts longer than Google's next algorithm change.

Introduction
It's been a while since I updated this, and a lot of things have changed so here's the short version:
  • I accepted a job with NYS as a web developer in May,2012. I work with a talented team creating and maintaining the web sites of our Governor. As such, I've worked many hours in crisis mode, helping to get important information out to NY'rs who are suffering through the aftermath of Super Storm Sandy. I love my job, and gain much satisfaction on several levels from the work I do.
  • Through several personal social experiments, I've decided that I'm happiest without a life partner right now. I was married for 23 years. Been there, done that, time to just enjoy being ME now.
  • My daughters are both in college now! They are both very intelligent, talented lil women that I'm so incredibly proud of. I'm dedicating myself to doing everything I can to make sure they are able to take advantage of every opportunity that comes their way.
  • Chronic pain is a part of my daily life, and it's exhausting. Although I refuse to let it define me in any way, it's only fair to make sure that those around me are aware of what I deal with, as a way of understanding certain eccentricities they may notice about me.
  • If I don't keep a high level of caffeine flowing through my veins, I get killer migraines that shut me down a day at a time. Good thing I've enjoyed the nectar of the Gods (coffee) for so long lol!
  • I'm a smoker, get over it. I'm considerate of others, and I don't allow it to intrude or effect my work or relationships. This is my life, I'm living it. If this offends you, I welcome you to stay far away.
