Adventure Resolution: Take it Easy.

"We’ve got to stop beating ourselves up about our outdoor imperfections. We fell in love with the lifestyle because of the freedom it offered us, not because it enslaved us to ideals. It made us happy, wild, and gave us confidence. It didn’t tear us down because we didn’t reach the climbing grade we thought would made us a “good climber” or because we didn’t knock off each of the 48 “4ks” of the White Mountains or thru-hike the PCT.

"We did that to ourselves."

East coast!

Decided it was time to follow up my "Winter Activities in Western National Parks" piece with a post showing my east coast (and southern) home some love.
You may have seen our post, "Winter Activities in 8 Western National Parks," but if you'd prefer to check out some east-coast sights during the beauty of winter, here's what we've gathered for you.

When “The 100 Best Small Art Towns In America” was published—which includes Canada’s best, too—it gave Nelson, BC top billing for Canada.

The publishers got it right.

Are you good for the outdoors?

Check my latest post to see if you know what you're doing out there (& if not, how you can wise up :)! http://www.tetonsports.com/adventureblog/detriment-asset-outdoors/

An eroded path cuts uphill, making short work of the long stretches of switchbacks that the national park maintains. “Why waste time?” you think as you jump over the log that was placed as a visual barricade to stay on trail. Clumps of alpine flowers dot the earth at the summit, and the delicate blue petals are like none you’ve seen before. You pick a few and press them into your guidebook as a memento.

Keep Jumbo Wild

You may have seen the recent involvement of +Patagonia and Sweetgrass Productions film on a "little" valley in interior British Columbia that is at war between those who want to develop it into a ski resort, and those who want to keep the remote area wild. This valley, Jumbo Valley, is in my neck of the woods. I took a hike to capture the views and came up with this non-political photo essay: http://blog.hellobc.com/hiking-jumbo-valley-photo-essay/ Decide for yourself on the issue.

+John LaFrano There are parts that would be really fun to ride, but the side I took up (there are two approaches) is sustained uphill and semi-steep, so you'd either have to hike it with your bike up or have good lungs. :) The Invermere side might be less intense uphill. Downhill would be pretty fun, though, on most parts.

I came across Dr. Rémi and his practice in the midst of really intense pain in my neck & back that was starting to present itself in my chest as well. It had gotten so bad that a few days I wasn't even able to get out of bed by myself. This pain came on suddenly but had lasted (and grew) for months as a result of increased workloads & stress as well as the corresponding long hours of sitting. I went to a general practice doctor who prescribed some heavy pain medication, but I never fulfilled the order since I knew that wasn't the road I wanted to go down. Dr. Rémi was at a local market when I met him and just his general attitude of openness and actually caring about my situation was so different than the general doctor I saw. I appreciated that since I felt pretty alone in understanding why I was going through this at such a young age. On the first visit, I learned a little about his family background and how he came from a line of chiropractors who used their skills to also help others, including children. That cemented the deal. I love seeing people giving their time to help others, and I saw that he truly cared about people. Since working with Dr. Rémi, I've noticed a decrease in the overall pain issues with no sharp/sudden pain anymore, a major decrease of headaches, and the ability to move and workout again. My mood has become more stable (I felt like I was starting to become a grumpy person before because of ongoing stress and pain!). It's a work in progress, but the progress is noticeable; I'm back to being able to hike, bike, do yoga, etc. Stress has gone down, sleep quality has gone up, I find myself smiling and joking around much more again, and generally, life is moving back to normal. Yay! Many thanks, Dr. Rémi!
