While the PCB might be one of a computer repair technician’s first choices of culprit when faced with a misbehaving hard drive, it may not always be the correct choice. Perhaps the PCB itself is fine, and the true problem lies where the technician can’t reach. Or perhaps the hard drive has suffered a compound failure, in which both the PCB and another component have failed.
After swapping the PCB didn't remedy this client's HDD failure, they brought their hard drive to Gillware. Our experts successfully recovered their data.

When you work for a data recovery lab like Gillware, you realize very quickly just how important your data is… and just how easily it can be lost.

Check out our recent guest article on the ACRBO blog to learn about the common symptoms that can tell you if your hard drive is getting ready to take a dirt nap.

Hard disk drives are a bit like living creatures, mainly in the sense that we humans can’t help ourselves from anthropomorphizing everything we see. But in a different way, hard drives aren’t much different from you or me, or any other living creature. They can get sick. They can break their bones.

If you think about your hard drive as a living creature, then its physical problems are like physical injuries or illnesses. Dropping it is like breaking its legs. Setting it on fire is like… well, setting it on fire. And when the logical side of your hard drive encounters a problem, it can feel a bit like your drive has a mental illness.
Our hard disk recovery experts retrieved all of this client's files after their WD My Passport hard drive became corrupted and inaccessible.

When video footage of a charity event went missing from a videographer's AJA Ki Pro storage module, they visited our lab to get their data back. We had to modify one of the methods in our bag of data recovery tricks to dredge up missing video stream data and present it in a usable form to our client.

In practice, RAID-1’s redundancy isn’t quite the security blanket it might seem. Both hard drives can simply die of old age at around the same time. Or the second drive might die before the first can be replaced. Both hard drives are also roughly equally at risk for the same environmental traumas. In this case, a single lightning strike caused a server crash by damaging both hard drives.
After a lightning strike cause a server crash, this client came to us for data recovery. Our cleanroom engineers successfully recovered their files.

When you use your hard drive, you’re constantly sending write commands to it every time you need to change even a tiny amount of the data on the drive. Deleting files or reformatting a disk is also a write command! You are actually writing data whenever you erase data. And RAID-1, eager to follow its instructions, duplicates those commands just as well as any other write command. It can’t tell the difference between a write command you meant to do and one you did by accident. Constructive and destructive commands look the same to it. So you say good-bye to your data… on both drives.

Whoops.
RAID-1's data redundancy doesn't protect your data from everything. Our RAID array recovery experts saved this clinic's ePHI from a system restore!

If you’ve been following our case study blog posts, you’ve probably noticed that we publish a lot of case studies about recovering data from Windows computers. But your Mac is vulnerable to data loss too!

In this Mac data recovery case, we had a client who’d uninstalled their OS X operating system so they could downgrade to a different version of OS X. After going through the OS downgrade process, they realized that a ton of their personal files were missing. Fortunately, they knew just who to call: the Mac data recovery experts at Gillware.
When this Mac user downgraded their OS, they ended up losing a lot of data. Our Mac data recovery experts successfully retrieved thousands of their files.

When you delete your files, they don't immediately go away forever. Instead, they end up in a sort of limbo until new data overwrites them--a purgatory for deleted data. We here at Gillware have gotten a lot of experience dragging these deleted files back into the realm of the living.
Our deleted photo recovery experts successfully recovered thousands of lost photos after they were deleted from a client's laptop.

After trying out Windows 10, plenty of people ultimately chose to back out and return to their old OS. It’s not hard to see why—early adopters have run into all sorts of issues over the past year and a half, such as annoying startup repair loops and program incompatibility issues. And that’s not even taking into account the worries many had (and still have) about Windows 10’s data collection capabilities and other worrying security issues. The client in this data recovery case chose to downgrade their PC back to Windows 7—but ended up losing their files in the process. It was up to the NTFS data recovery experts in Gillware’s lab to get them back.
After Windows 10 downgrade problems caused this client to lose data, our NTFS data recovery experts successfully recovered their most important documents.

When your hard drive is suffering from some sort of malfunction, it may appear to your computer to be blank. And so your computer will do what it thinks it needs to do—tell you the drive is “not initialized”. This failure can be anything from bad sectors on the drive’s hard disk platters to a problem with its read/write heads or firmware.

The PCB, or printed control board, sits on the bottom of your hard drive. When you power on your computer, electricity flows through the PCB and into your drive’s spindle motor, setting the hard disk platters in motion.

This company is great, and their prices are what they should be for data recovery. The required tools, manpower, and knowledge are astronomical to perform such a task. Not to mention, they only get paid if it's successful. 5 Stars for sure

Sent them about 8 hard drives so far. The official quote always comes back at NEARLY the TOP of the estimate. I have a feeling they do this no matter what the recovery needed. One aspect I dont like is they only give you a few weeks to make a decision, and they keep calling until they get an answer. Normally not an issue but MY customers take time to give me an answer. Free shipping to send the drive in but you must pay return shipping if you dont move forward with the work, AND IT'S ALWAYS BEEN $19.50 OR MORE FOR BASIC RETURN SHIPPING. WOW! I had 2 or 3 customer go ahead (Accept The Quote) and they all had the required data recovered. They sure know how to do that, but it's going to cost ya!

I was referred to Gillware by a friend and I don't regret taking his advice at all. Our hard drive died suddenly out of the blue and we lost everything which included family photos and videos. Florence, who initially reached out after my request for a quote, did a wonderful job of explaining the process and I felt like the deal was too good to be true, but it was legit. The initial estimate I received was $650-$1,500 for a 1TB. It seemed a little steep, but you have no financial obligation to them until you are satisfied with what they've recovered. This means, they pay for you to ship the drive to them, although I didn't utilize that since I am local, it is a perk. They then diagnose your drive, mine was a Tier 2 recovery, at no cost to you. Then they attempt to recover your data. Upon completion of that, they provide you with a final quoted price, my final cost before tax, shipping, and the external hard drive was $750. They will also provide a summary of what they were able to recover. At that point you can decide if they've recovered what you want and tell them to go forward. It is at this point when you pay them. That's a huge upfront investment on their part. They were able to recover 99% of my files, the ones they couldn't I didn't even care about any way. Their service is also super fast. I dropped off my hard drive on a Tuesday afternoon and they had everything shipped and I received it by Friday afternoon. Although it's still hard to swallow the cost, I don't regret it for a second. I would do it all over again if I had to. Let's hope that's not the case, but if I needed to, I would definitely use Gillware again. I highly recommend them; you provide approval to them every step of the way. They will not do anything until you give them the okay.

It has taken me a while to write this, as I am ambivalent about how I feel. I lost all my pictures when my hard drive crashed. I had them backed up but there was a glitch with that too, so all gone, just like that. A local business told me about Gillware and I contacted them. They are very professional and do exactly what they say they can do. HOWEVER, the price took my breath away. I am not sorry I got them back and I am grateful for this service, but I wish they had rates for seniors or for people like me who couldn't stand to lose something so precious. So I would give them five stars if the price had been more reasonable. Everytime a pictures comes up on my screen, I am again grateful for this service. Sandra DeLuck
