Environmental Sciences with Madeline Goodwin! #gifted #homeschool #stem

We live on a 12,756-kilometer-wide ball of rock hurtling through space at 108,000 kilometers an hour while spinning at 460 meters per second, which is composed of 32% iron, 30% oxygen, 15% silicon, 14% magnesium, and 7% other stuff. That ball of rock is surrounded by an atmosphere that contains 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen, and has a hydrosphere with 1.4 billion cubic kilometers of water cycling between the solid, liquid, and gaseous stages.

Plates grind together, lava resists pressure, air spins into storms. This world is a force of nature. Let's take a tour of our planet!

""And this, above all else, is why I loved reading “Stuck in the Mud” to Kbear and Chimp. “Stuck in the Mud” is a children’s book written by Simon Calcavecchia, in which a dachshund named Frank gets stuck as his doggy wheelchair has difficulty navigating through some tough terrain. His little bird friend, Mustard, along with Mustard’s recruits, help him out. Not once in this book was Frank’s wheelchair or missing hind legs talked about. He simply is Frank. End of story. Without spelling it out, kids see that life in a wheelchair can bring some difficulties that people without adaptive equipment don’t need to think about.""

US Public Education Policy: Missing Voices

http://giftedhomeschoolers.org/resources/parent-and-professional-resources/articles/educational-policy/us-public-education-policy-missing-voices/

The most significant result of this research is the documentation of a melding of educational options. Families surveyed by GHF are not making choices based on ideology so much as they are seeking the best fit for each child, based on the needs of that child and of the family at any given place and time. Families of all kinds deserve a seat at the education policy-making table, and families who homeschool should not be permanently marginalized—left unheard—because they have chosen to do what they believe is best for the academic and developmental needs of their children.

Mother’s Day is Around the Corner! #parenting

After Congress vetoed Mother’s Day in 1908, President Woodrow Wilson took it upon himself to sign the holiday into law in 1914. The rest of the world joined in on the celebration shortly after—the UK celebrating it on the fourth Sunday of Lent, Morocco celebrating it on the last Sunday of May, and Vietnam celebrating it on March 8, alongside over 40 other countries celebrating it throughout the spring.

We’re not just talking Easter and Passover! Let’s take a kid’s-eye jaunt around the globe with this sampling of festive books, and don’t be surprised if your plastic pastel eggs suddenly pale in comparison to the Technicolor vision of Holi!
