The latest stats from Mary Meeker's Internet Trends deck (http://www.kpcb.com/internet-trends) show that desktop isn't fading much at all (in fact, there's more desktop use today than 6 years ago). But mobile is skyrocketing.
I'll probably have a few more slides to share from this deck, as her stuff is always superb.

The timing is interesting, Google was granted a patent on Real Time Search Results this week, when Twitter and Google renewed their partnership for Google to start using Twitter's Firehose of Tweets again.
The patent provides details on how they might score News Articles and Blog posts as real time search results as well as status updates (tweets).
