Setting +Google Analytics Custom Dimensions with No Code
Someone recently asked how they could collect "Article Author" in Google Analytics. My suggestion is to use a Custom Dimension - then view the data in a custom report or dashboard.
But, for this particular company, adding the Custom Dimension code to the site is a lot of work - so my friend asked if there was a non-code way. Sure!
You could use an old-fashioned View Filter. This option requires NO EXTRA code or technical knowledge. Use an Advanced Filter to pull out the data from the URL and then stuff it into the Custom Dimension.
In the image below, I use a regular expression to pull out the year from the URL and then put it in a Custom Dimension.

There are two other methods that could also work:
1. You could use Google Tag Manager. This is not 100% code free solution, but it's easier than adding code directly to the page.
2. You could use Dimension Widening. But you need to export the data and then import it into Google Analytics.
