In preparation of my next trip to Africa (to get some fresh pics for  #AfricanTuesday ), I refreshed my (very basic) off-road driving skills with a full-day training on an outdoor range at the German Automobile club ADAC. Each of the participants was provided with an original #Russian   #Lada   #Niva . Equipped with latest Soviet technology like an underpowered gasoline engine, a speedometer that extends to 200km/h, permanent heating (even if you don't need it), permanent four wheel drive and a central differential lock, it offers handling characteristics like a tractor and moves gracefully through rough terrain while squiggling around like a wet sponge on asphalt...

This was a fun day, we learnt a lot, hopefully enough to make it through #Richtersveld .

These tiny boats cross the narrow gap between Ile Sainte Marie and the tiny Ile aux Nattes and bring daytime visitors back and forth. We were lucky to stay 2 nights on the tiny island...

Spectacular video footage from a U2 spy plane at 70000ft. Couldn't believe that it lifts off after a ridiculous 100m take-off roll...

A vast majority of Members of the European Parliament have voted to remove wording from a current copyright reform proposal that may have caused a lot of trouble for photographers. The proposal would have required photographers who would create or use images that feature buildings or public artwork under copyright to obtain permission to do so. Read more

The place where I worship is the wild open spaces (Calie Pistorius)
Introduction
I am a physicist who loves his profession and a passionate amateur photographer. Primary subjects are nature, wildlife and travel photography. This is what I mostly share on G+. I love to engage with other passionate amateur or professional photographers, always willing to learn and evolve.

All work on my photos, including RAW processing, creating slide show movies and books is done with open source software on a Linux operating system. I love the open source approach to both software and hardware technology and any new ideas, developments and fields of usage are welcome!

Southern Africa and Madagascar are my primary destinations - anything important happening there certainly matters for me. I'm also dreaming of returning to Nigeria one day where I spent a significant part of my childhood.

Science and technology are welcome topics as long as people know what they're talking about and don't abuse it for their political agenda. I am curious about constructive out-of-the-box ideas that foster human progress and the protection of nature and biodiversity but I hate superficial smattering about saving the planet and hubristic, totalitarian ideologies that consider human beings as a disease that needs to be wiped off the planet. If you want to bother someone with your 64738th lament about global warming, please go elsewhere.
