London's cycling infrastructure "The lacklustre but serious proposals demonstrate that those working on road designs in London simply do not understand how to create good quality cycling infrastructure. The crazy ideas demonstrate something else: that those in charge don't know what to ask for."

"What London needs to do now is exactly what the city has needed to do for the last 42 years: Quietly get on with building a high quality grid of cycling routes to every destination and which absolutely everyone can use"
Two years have now passed since London's cycling "czar" told the world that his city was 40 years behind Amsterdam. London's mayor, Boris Johnson, has now been in power for more time than it took to transform the entirety of the Netherlands for cycling, with no substantial progress occurring ...

Reference Counting I don't know Objective C, but from what I understand, this must feel like porting all your code back from C# to Visual Basic 6. Oh how I miss the good old days of tracing down circular dependencies!

Garbage Collection is hard, so lets just ignore decades of knowledge, sing lalala and switch back to semi-automatic memory management patterns of the 90s. At least we can pretend our stuff looks food.

Next step: replacing threads with coroutines and overlapping windows with tiles.

And then Nikolaus Worth will speak up: "told you so!" And Oberon v4 will be resurrected and the world will be a happy place.

Luckily there are alternative languages on OSX aside from Objective-C.

Jetty Security For popular Java-based web server Jetty, an attacker may read session information of other users by preparing special requests. This is somewhat similar to HeartBleed. Since Jetty is used all over the place and is often bundled with other products, such as Hadoop. Let the security updates begin!

Livable Cities: "Livable cities start slowly, says Gil Penalosa, founder and chair of 8-80 Cities. They start with traffic slowed down to 20 mph in neighborhoods, to make pedestrians safe whether they are eight or 80 years old. Bike lanes are physically separated from roadways so people who would have never considered biking feel safe pedaling their toddlers to school. They have public spaces that celebrate public life, including parks where people can gather, play and rest. And they have clean, fast, public transportation that gives people choices about how to get around."

Illegal Parking Day Illegal parking often is annoying or even dangerous for bicyclists. On the other hand: Why not park bikes on the street, if cars do it all the time?

Retiring Python as teaching language: "My recommended language for teaching beginners is now Javascript. I know, I know, it's quirky and sometimes outright weird, but overall it's decent and modern enough. More importantly it's sitting on top of an unprecedentedly ubiquitous cross-platform toolkit for layout, typography, and rendering."
Retiring Python as a Teaching Language. For the last ten years, my standard advice to someone looking for a programming language to teach beginners has been start with Python. And now I'm changing that recommendation. Python is still a fine language. It lets you focus on problem solving and not ...

Introduction
Starting way back in the early 80s with Basic on the C64 I quickly moved to Assembler to get things done. I still have a copy of the complete C64 ROM listing.

After visiting Visual Basic, the Windows API, C++ and QT, I'm now happy as a web and backend developer, doing Scala, PHP, Python and still C++.

I'm the programmer of both the backend and frontend of strucr.com, a web service to crawl and analyze entire web sites giving helpful insights to make them better for users.

I released PHP application framework Gyro-PHP as open source a while ago.

Gutes Essen, nettes Personal.
