The other day, Pope Francis unleashed an Elizabeth Warren/Bernie Sanders-worthy-salvo about banks and the financial system. But his words could have easily been about the Vatican Bank and the undue power it has wielded for decades inside the church. If Francis feels this strongly, GOD'S BANKERS makes it clear his best choice was simply closing the scandal ridden bank.

Pope Francis: "Saving banks at any cost, making the public pay the price, foregoing a firm commitment to reviewing and reforming the entire system, only reaffirms the absolute power of a financial system, a power which has no future and will only give rise to new crises after a slow, costly and only apparent recovery."

Beware short story writers. Viva Tolstoy :-)

"Amazon says that the change comes in response to some complaints from authors of longer books, who felt short-shrifted under the old system."

It only affects Amazon Unlimited, their digital lending library.

In extemporaneous remarks on Sunday to a group of young Catholics in Turin, Pope Francis unexpectedly addressed the Holocaust.

"The great powers had photographs of the railway routes that the trains took to Auschwitz to kill Jews, Christians, homosexuals, everybody.  Why didn't they bomb?”
He told the youngsters: “In today's world, everything is done for money."

It’s great that the Pope is taking the “great powers” to task for how little they did to stop the largest civilian massacre in modern history.  But I suggest it is disingenuous given the church’s controversial public silence during World War II.  Those of you who have read GOD'S BANKERS know I tried to shed some light about what the Vatican knew, when it knew it, and why the wartime Pope, Pius XII, failed to act more forcefully to stop the slaughter.  No Pope can point a finger at the “great powers” without also asking about the role of the church.

Since the publication of GOD'S BANKERS, I have called on Pope Francis to order the release of the Vatican’s long-sealed Holocaust-era files.  It is long overdue that those records finally be made public.  This Pope can do it.  The question is whether or not he will….

Today, June 18, is the anniversary of Robert Calvi’s murder in London.

Those who have started GOD’S BANKERS are well aware that the grisly morning discovery, 34 years ago today, of an Italian banker hanging from London’s Blackfriars Bridge, is the start of the tale down the rabbit hole into the world of Vatican finances. Calvi was one of Italy’s top bankers, a friend of the Pope, and one of the Vatican Bank’s key business partners. He was also the mastermind of a byzantine offshore Ponzi-styled banking empire that finally collapsed, earning him a criminal fraud conviction and nearly bringing the Vatican Bank under.

A few days after he fled Italy, with a false passport on a private jet, he ended up swinging from Blackfriars. Ruled a suicide by Scotland Yard, it took 25 years before investigators reversed themselves and classified it as murder. In 2010, 5 men - including top mobsters and a former grand master of secret Masonic Lodge of which Calvi was a member - were tried and acquitted.

Calvi’s murder remains unsolved.
(with all due apologies to Godfather III)

THE CRYPT OF SKULLS
At a GOD'S BANKERS book signing over the weekend, someone asked me for a standout memory of our research trips to Rome over the years.  That prompted me to dig out a few pictures of the one stop  that was without question the most unique:  The Capuchin Monks Crypt of Skulls made from thousands of human bones and corpses.  Along Rome’s Via Veneto, sandwiched between luxe hotels and upscale restaurants, is a fair...ly non-descript 18th-century church.  Inside are 5 large rooms that constitute one of the most unusual and macabre ossuaries anywhere.  There are mummified corpses, the bones of about 4,000 monks, even those of children.  Bones are set as decorations into the ceilings and walls and used to make coats of arms and crosses.  Some of the corpses are arranged in prayer, and the rooms each bear their own names, such as “The Crypt of Shin Bones and Thigh Bones.”

The Marquis de Sade evidently called the Capuchin Crypt a “monument to funerary art.”  Can’t say I disagree. See More — with Trisha Posner at Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini.

Quick stop to sign stock of GOD'S BANKERS at B&N in Boca Raton. So, still in Christian Life at Barnes & Noble but now at least with 'Top Picks,' vying with Joel Osteen and Joan of Arc for readers' eyes

"Drama and intrigue...trouble at the Vatican?"
Who is out to undermine Pope Francis?

Listen to this 4 minute excerpt from my talk with Michael Smerconish this morning on Sirius

#GodsBankers

Michael talks to Gerald Posner, author of "God's Bankers: A History of Money and Power at the Vatican" about the early leak of the Pope's encyclical on climate change. Posner says it was clearly done

Michael Smerconish's CNN interview was the first about GODS BANKERS, a few days before the book’s February 3 publication. This morning I’m glad to return to his Sirius show to talk about whether the extraordinary leak of the Pope’s climate change encyclical earlier this week is a a troubling sign that traditionalists in the Curia are ramping up their efforts to undermine Francis…..

I should be on be around 10:30AM at http://www.siriusxm.com/potus

My wife and I have dealt with many 'car dealers' over the years, and most of them leave a lot to be desired. That is especially true with specialty/exotic cars. Half the time the dealer seems to act as though they are doing you a favor by taking your money. With those mediocre experiences as the unfortunately default standard in South Florida, Kessler Auto Group stands out as a one-of-a-kind family run shop that caters impeccably to a customer's individuals needs. Steve Kessler, who used to own Manhattan's only Ferrari dealership, has been in the business for a long time and that experience pays off. His small group, composed of family and a few auto industry veterans, make you feel special from the moment you enter their compact office. The people at Kessler seemed to not just be interested in earning my business for a single sale, but in making the entire experience so simple and satisfying that I will keep coming back to them for years to come. Ultimately, they were top notch pros, working hard to get me the right car on a tight budget, and to sell my trade at a super price. Kessler is the first place I will now call for anything to do with great cars.
