One of a very small handful of my genuine heroes was in Miami today. Benjamin Ferencz was a 27-year-old attorney whose first case in 1947 was when he was the chief prosecutor in Nuremberg for the war crimes trial of 22 SS men from the Nazi mobile killing squads. They were charged with murdering more than a million Jews. All 22 were convicted and 13 sentenced to death.

Ben Ferencz, who will be 97 in a few weeks, still lectures and writes. He is the author of one of the great works about the Holocaust, "Less Than Slaves," the definitive account of Nazi slave labor. I cited his work in "Mengele" as +trisha posner did in her recent "The Pharmacist of Auschwitz."

Today, he spoke to the ABA Center for Human Rights in downtown Miami. Trisha and I were not able to make the event because we were out of town, but many thanks to our great friend, Alan Zinkin, who managed to take a couple of our signed books to Ben.

CONGRATULATIONS on today's The San Diego Union-Tribune full page of Michael Granberry's great review of The Pharmacist of Auschwitz

"Posner's book doubles as the spellbinding story of Nazi Germany's largest industrial conglomerate, I.G. Farben . . . [and] in one important way, her book is a celebration of a rare kind of heroism. Its compelling side story offers an in-depth profile of Nazi hunter Fritz Bauer, who proved relentless in hunting down Capesius and bringing him to justice."

OK, it might be difficult for those who don't know  Trisha Posner  very well to appreciate that her confidence disappears when she has to do some public event or publicity for her book. Having lived with her subject for a year, and being passionate about it...
