If I were the director/scriptwriter, I would set up the story by having the daughter tell her dad: "If only mum is still alive, she would know what to do..." That will spur the dad to fill in those shoes, and have a full circle when the baby is named after her grandmother.
Also, I will tap on the technologies further by having the baby's father check in more often. Even while deployed, I am sure he is also able to use Skype and e-mail, look at the ultrasound image via cam, and perhaps receive photos of the crib etc. and be involved in the choosing of the baby's name, or better still, be the one who suggests using his MIL's name as a tribute.
To me, that would have been a more complete ad, instead of an absent father-to-be who does not feature at all over the 9 months of his wife's pregnancy, and having his FIL take his place...
