Amazing to see all the freighters lined up because of the longshoremen's strike. And the submarine tucked in next to the bow of that classic ocean liner. Oh yeah, the plane is awesome, too. I love how form follows function.

I knew about the longshoremen's strike but, I had no clue just how many freighters were lined up waiting to deliver.  It was definitely a sight to behold.

Please think about this. Encourage media to discourage future shooters' desire for infamy. Don’t repeat their names or circulate their images. As a bereaved father, whose child was killed in Aurora, asserts: “My son would be just as dead if the killer’s name was John Doe. The name is irrelevant."

My photobook “year in review”; not all new, but all worth reading.
Tah Dah! A bunch of books. I believe a year has to be fully over before any summary statements can be made about it. Look at what happened to Alec Soth; he had a set aside a favorite in fall, then got one last book that blew ...

I met Katie and discussed her work in 2011, showed a couple of pieces as part of a regional survey at Flash Forward. I find it exciting and discomfiting. It is alluring on one hand, then somehow repellent. And I mean that in a positive way. Katie’s work is, like Jen says, “raw and wide-open”—the pie image in this group is outstanding.

W.A.G.E. = Working Artists and the Greater Economy
I think artists should be paid for services rendered, don't you? Lisa Soskolne lays out the argument in depth. Just under 24 well-articulated minutes of provocative suggestions.

Warm-up laps completed on Fotoblog
It’s taken me longer than expected to get into the swing of things over there on the Hatje Cantz blog, but I feel like I’m finding my stride. Remember, this is a thought in process; I hope to finish the race by month’s end. Link to entry number 3 . Feel fre...

Revving up for a few laps on another track.
I was pleased and honored to receive an invitation from the German publisher Hatje Cantz to guest-host their “fotoblog” in February. Here’s the list of others who have had this gig. Some pretty tough acts to follow: Although they didn’t insist that I do thi...

I appreciate that you did this video without voiceover or audible reactions. It's just the stuff, doing what it does. I would like to see better lighting, but that might go against the grain of hand-made discovery that you've established. You see it as we see it. Or vice versa.

A brilliant and moving example of new media journalism. Not to mention a heart-wrenching, gut-turning story. Amazing.
For decades, dozens of men with intellectual disabilities lived in an old schoolhouse and worked in a turkey plant. No one knew just what they endured.
