My Love of Architecture & What the Skyscrapers Of Today Mean To Me

Look, it's no secret that I'm a massive vintage fan - just look at my posts over the years and you'll see topics like Old Hollywood, and vintage collectibles, and nostalgia swims often into my posts. Architecture was my first love, at a very young age. Wait, no. I had a drum set at age five, but I started architectural drawings around 6 or 7.

If I wasn't going to be an architect, I wanted to be an astronaut. That was my growing up. But something about modern architecture today, especially when it comes to large-scale projects and skyscrapers, sits the wrong way with me. It's hard to put into words: there is a majesty to buildings like the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building. Works like the visitors entrance to The Louvre, and buildings by Frank Lloyd Wright and Frank Gehry (who kind of bored me with his sameness later on, other that a cool building like the Fred & Ginger building in Prague. I'm missing a hundred other great buildings, like the Transamerica Pyramid in San Francisco, and so many others, but these new looks perplex me.

The Shard? The Burj? Not getting the "why" behind the design. The work below, or the numerous works by the Queen of the Curve, Zaha Hadid? My eyes race everywhere and the symmetry I always loved about architecture was thrown overboard. I know this is "the look" today, and maybe many people see beauty in it. I see more chaos, and less order, and order was what first attracted me to architecture as that young boy.

Anyway, this sounds like a rant from an old man, but enough already with the endless twists, and turns, and curves. There's beauty in straight lines and other angular effects as well, dagnabbit! :-)
